So Matthew used to sleep holding a plastic shovel. Well a few weeks ago, he found a little stuffed dog that my MIL bought for him 2 years ago when I was pregnant. Ever since then he seems to be growing more and more attached to "Puppy". It's really cute. He sleeps with him and cuddles him, took him to the grocery store and to Mother's Day Out.

But...I have no way of finding a backup! The dog has a little Christmasy looking scarf and I'm sure it was seasonal. MIL doesn't remember it or where she got it from (maybe when she sees it in a few days she'll remember). I've always heard you should have a backup in case the lovey gets lost. Especially with him taking it to Mother's Day Out, I don't want it to get lost.

I hunted around on ebay and I found another puppy, same size and maker, but it has different colored fur (brown instead of white) and a different scarf.

Do you think he will still see this backup as his lovey even though it's different? (I haven't gotten it in the mail yet) Should I just call it by the same name "Puppy" or call it by something else to differentiate them? I am probably overthinking this I just don't have any experience with this stuff, but I've heard horror stories of loveys getting lost and the child being heartbroken!

Dustin has a little duckie dressed in a bunny suit.. it's weird haha. He loves it and calls it his baby. Super cute

There is no way I can find a back up. So he's not allowed to take it out of the house. He's slowly learning.. we have less fights each time. I am like you, afraid he'll lose it... with three kids, its hard to keep track of things like loveys and such haha.

I doubt he'd accept a different one as his lovey... maybe though.

Does he need it for Mothers Day Out? Or could he leave it at home? I'm assuming it's like a day care where they would pay special attention to it if you asked maybe? I'm not sure how that works. Maybe talk to them about it and ask that they make sure to always pack it at the end of the day. I don't know how day cares and such work.

I wanted him to have it at MDO because if it helps him feel comforted while I'm gone and also for nap time, then I hate to not let him have it, you know? I did write his name on the tag (everything there gets labeled) so it probably won't get lost, it's just you never know.

I was hoping maybe he could have one puppy for at home and then the second different puppy could be the one he takes when we leave the house, IF he will go for it and still be comforted by it.

Kylie's lovey's are all different, but similar. I have those little blankets with the heads and then she has two soft, silky blankets, so she has lots of back-ups because she asks for them now when she is ready for bed. As long as she has one of them, she is happy. So I would try using the similar back-up and see how it goes.

Amara hasn't taken to any one particular toy and I'm happy about that. Sometimes she wants dolly, other times Dora, other times something else. One night she wanted to take a book to bed so I just let her. We have a few items in the car but she knows we don't take it to preschool so we don't have a problem there and if we're going out anywhere, I let her choose something she wants to take.

I'm thinking like Steph. If it's still pretty early, he may switch without any problems.

My kids are the same way as Mia. They have a handful of different "lovies" and no back ups for any of them. Morgan has her "tigger and pooh" blanket that I made for her and her princess blanket. Ian has his monkey blanket that my mom made him. You just have to keep a realllly good eye on them in order not to loose them. When Ian was little I bought this little hanging monkey from the dollar tree and bought a back up, he wouldnt touch the back up and only played with that one main monkey.

I had multiple backups. he had 4 wooden blocks (odd I know) but they were orange, greem dark blue and light blue. I once had to go through the trash can at a restaurant to find the blue one. He lost one lovie and I couldn't find a replacement and it was horrid! So form then on I had 3 of each lovie as it came around. 3 #6's from the lil people pre-school, 3 percy's, 3 thomas's. I think we actually have 4 Harold the Helicopters LOL! The only thing he had one of after the tragic diego hat loss was his mamaw blanket as he called it.

Well here's my lovey update: The new puppy is smaller in addition to being a different color. The first day I gave it to him he then wanted to carry BOTH puppys around, doh! So after that plus one of the puppys going into the mulch by the flower beds, we are going to have two rules.

Rule #1 Neither puppy can go outside because puppy might get dirty.
Rule #2 He can only take one puppy out of the house to travel with and the 2nd has to be left at home.

So far he seems to like the original puppy better but he slept with puppy #2 only for his nap today and that went fine.

I am glad I got the 2nd one, I think he will take to it enough that it will be acceptable to him as a backup even if he prefers the 1st one.
