When choosing middle names do you use a family name, name after a person, or a name you like?

Does it have to go really well with the first and last name?

We used a combination of family names but it is a name that I liked and always wanted to use. I don't think we would use a family name we don't like just to use it.

Her middle name is Jaelynn, J being my grandfather's name, which is used a lot in my family, and Lynn being my dad's name. It is pronounced like two separate names, NOT with the emphasis on the jay sound as you might think, so I think it goes well with her first name. We almost spelled it J'lynn just to make that clearer, but dh has an apostrophe in his name and hates it... no one knows how to pronounce his name and it is a PITA on government forms.

His middle name is Reid, which is a name we both liked and flowed really well with his first and last names.

With this baby, his middle name will be after a family member but like Krista, we wouldn't use a name we didn't like in the first place.

My son was named after my cousin -- we just lengthened his first name to Johnathan from John. Jarrett is his middle name. There was no thought to his name, I knew if I had a boy he would be named after my cousin

We want names that flow well with the first and last names. Seamus has 2 middle names one of which is dh's dad's middle name. It went well with his whole name and we were kind of being "mean" and gave him the initals of SPAM.

Kieran's was tougher we couldn't find a middle name that we reaally liked that sounded much better then Kieran Elizabeth so thats what we went with.

If we have a boy next his middle name will most likely be my dad's first name, cause I like the way it flows.

for me it has to go with the first name, but i also like it to go with something meaningful.

Theodore is a long name, so it needs a short middle name. My husbands middle name is James. It worked

We reserve the middle name slot to name after somebody. Liam's is Edward after dh's and my grandfathers; Lochlann's is Erik which is dh's middle name; Lila's is Agnes after dh's grandmother. Now I have to admit I'm not a fan of Liam's or Lila's middle names but they hold great meaning for my dh so I went with it. If we ever have another baby the middle name will be John after my Dad or Mildred after my maternal grandmother. Again, don't really like Mildred but it would be a lot to me and my Mom to use it (my Mom was only 6 when her Mom died).

We did and will do family names but ones that we like. Oliver's mn is Wilhelm after my Opa. If we have a girl her mn will be Hanni after my Oma who passed away years ago. I'm not sure what we would do for a mn if we had another boy but I'd look for a family name.

we will do family names for middle names. For a girl we will use Ellen or Eleni which is my middle name, my paternal grandmother's first name and maternal grandmother's middle name. For a boy we'll probably use Scott, which is DH's middle name. We also really like William and John (for FIL and my dad). We're lucky that our families have lots of decent names that we like, but if it came down to it I would use a a name with no meaning that I liked before a family name that I hated lol.

Family names. Has to flow okay with the rest of the name. I have one family name I'd love to use but it sounds very strange with our last name.

I do love when people ask Matthew's middle name and hear that it is Azizi. No one expects it.

For this next little one, he may either have John or Thomas as a middle name, after my dad.

The middle names we've chosen are all family names that flow well with the first and last name.

We use family names for first and middle names. We wanted names that meant aot to us.

Curtis' middle name is Leslie and that's FIL's middle name.
Dustin's middle name is Ray. Dustin Ray is actually James' given name at birth, it was later changed to James Curtis when he was adopted.
AJ is actually Adam James. James is from Daddy.

Adeline's middle name is Louise after my grandmother.. We do plan to use more family names as middle names for future children.. I like the idea of having that meaning to their name!

It is tradition on DH's side to do two middle names, both family names. We have decided together to mirror who are are honoring with the middle names. For example, we have ___ Christian Maxwell picked out. Christian is my dad's middle name and Maxwell is his father's middle name. We have two sets of middle names set in stone already, as we are hoping to have two children.

We chose two middle names. Théo was my grandfather's name and Joseph was Chris' grandfather.

We use a name we like and I think it we like for it to flow with the first. I choose names by meanings so the meaning of the second name or the reason for choosing it has to compliment the first name.

I want at least one family name and it HAS to flow nicely with the first name (or middle if it's the first).

Edward-being the oldest, he got two family names...Edward from Chris' (adopted) father, and his middle name is Robert from my dad. So he's named after both of his grandfathers.

Preston's middle name is James, my grandfather's first name.

Mason's middle name is Paul, Chris' grandfather's first name (and Chris' and his dad's middle name too).

If we have another boy, his name will be Sirius Oren (Oren is my great great grandfather on my father's mother's side) and if we have a girl, her name will be Arabella Joyce (Joyce is my grandmother's name).

With Chris we used a family middle name, it's my grandpa's and my fave cousins. With the girls, they have NO middle name, like their daddy(Mostly because we suck at picking girl names).

Family names, especially for boys (there are great male names for us to choose from)

For girls, probably just names that we like since all of the family female names are awful. haha.

Reid's middle name is my husband's first name.
