Are you planting a garden this year?
What are you planting?
Any tips and advice you'd like to share?

I'll be planting a garden in the next couple of weeks. Just flowers. In the front yard, and some big pots, and maybe a hanging basket. I have NO tips.... I am still learning. It's something special me and my MIL do together

I wanted to plant my first vegetable garden SO bad this year. Then I realized I have no where to put it! I have a big back yard, but these stupid pine weeds (aka pine trees) shade my entire yard! I hate my pine weeds. Don't get me wrong, I love trees, and I even respect pine trees, I just don't like pine trees in my yard. They shed needles that can hurt and cones that really hurt if you step on them, and their limbs seem to be brittle because they are always falling! Not to mention if a hurricane blows through! They are very messy. And when they get in the mood they jiz their yellow sticky icky (pollen) all over everything! I don't want tree sperm on my stuff!
I have some pent up aggression towards my pine weeds.

I'm planting heirloom, grape, and roma tomatoes. I also have some italian basil. I'm using a foodmap container that I bought. This is my first attempt and I have a black thumb. No tips!
Krista, that stinks about the pine trees. I bet you wish you could cut them down. That way you could enjoy your backyard and not worry about Charlotte getting poked. Maybe you could plant a few things in a container? That way you could put them in the front or side yard. Or a safe place in the backyard.
We have a tiny yard (like 3500 sq ft. so we can't go all out with a garden in the ground. I've heard container gardening is a lot easier and gives great results.

I have a teeny tiny back yard too, and it's full sun! You'd think that's a good thing, but since it's so small and the siding on the back of my house is white and the fences are white and there's a cement patio taking up half the yard it can get pretty intense back there. Our soil is really saturated, so planting a tree has failed (they always die). Despite the crappy conditions, I still manage to plant a lot of flowers and it looks quite nice. I also manage to fit in a few tomatoes and peppers and zucchini and lots of different herbs in pots (basil, rosemary, parsley and I have thyme and chives in the ground). I'm trying a few new things this year w/ tomatoes - those upside down hanging bag thingamabobs and I also decided to get a plot at our community garden since it's within walking distance. I have no idea how much room I'll get, but I'm hoping to put in a few tomatoes and some assorted greens and peppers. We shall see. Oh, and I'm also going to grow some wax beans and hope my crappy wet soil doesn't kill it.

The soil here is awful too. It's clay. Another reason for container gardening.

Nope. Not my house so I can't do anything I want to do. When we get our own place I'd love to do a little garden with the kids. They'd really like it!

I'm planting a herb and vegetable garden. I don't have the seasons so mine is a bit different.

I'm not planting anything because I suck at watering the flowers and everything dies.

Those of you with limited space -- have you heard of square foot gardening? That's what I was going to do until I realized my pine weed predicament. It is a method to have a vegetable garden in far less space. There is a new method and an old method. The new method encourages the use of these raised boxes and vermiculite. I wasn't going to do it because of the need for the boxes and the vermiculite. But if you can find the old boom on it, it just plants in the ground with good old fashioned soil.
Resi -- I do wish I could get rid of my pine weeds! I would love to have fruit trees and magnolias instead. I even got an estimate, but it was expensive -- $4500! but since we have eleven of the darn things, it is quite a job. But there is something heartbreaking about cutting down a big tree, no matter how annoying it is. I am just going to make it a point to look for houses with no pine weeds next time we are in the market.

Our soil is bad to. We tried planting in it last year and it didn't go well. So far we have 3 different types of Tomato's, Green beans, Bell Peppers, and a few herb's. David add's more every once in a while. Since David used to work in a nursery for like 15+ years he's good at it and know's what he's doing. I water every other day but Im not good at "Gardening"...

I wish I could take a few of your big pine trees from you! We have two small trees in our backyard that we planted and NO shade and it sucks so bad not having any shade here in Houston.
We also have this horrible "gumbo" soil that has a bunch of clay in it, it's hard to grow anything. We had to replace all the soil for a flowerbed that we put in on the side yard (lots of hard work and money).
I do have two pots this year. One has basil that I can harvest anytime (just haven't made any basil pasta lately!) and the other has two bell pepper plants that are coming along fairly well. Matthew is so cute, he always wants to "water plants" now and we let him use a little tiny watering can to do it.

From what I've read you can plant just about anything in containers. Melons, corn, carrots.. all the things you wouldn't think of.
