We fed Charlotte cows milk for the first time this weekend. She's had sour cream and lots of yogurt and mashed potatoes with milk, but the tiny bit of milk she drank made her throw up. I'm guessing it was the cows milk. Just a tiny bit of throw up. I thought it was spit up but it smelled too rank for that.
Anyway, I read that lactose intolerance causes issues with both human milk and cows milk, and that to have it this early is extremely rare and requires the passage of the gene from both parents. Considering no one in my family has a milk problem, I think we can rule that out. I also read a milk allergy would present the normal skin rash or respiratory issues that most food allergies cause, so I'm guessing it wasnt an allergy either. But that leaves me with nothing! I dont know what to think.
Any ideas? Maybe it was completely unrelated to the milk. She also had gas pain later that night, but that could have been a number of things -- she's been kinda gassy lately. I'm probably going to retry milk next week and will definitely ask the doctor about it. In the mean time I was wondering if anyone experienced anything similar? Any insight or advice?

Is it the first time she's had any milk related products? It could be too much at once with the yogurt, sourcream, and milk.

She's been eating yogurt for a while now, it has never given her problems. She's only had sour cream a couple of times. And she's had cheese with no problem too.
Although, when I gave her the cow's milk she coincidently didn't like the potatoes dh cooked for her lunch so she ended up eating yogurt instead. Normally I wouldn't feed yogurt and milk at the same time, but yogurt was just our back up, you know? Maybe you have a point -- maybe it was the combination of the two??

Shes still little .. chloe at her age still would sometime spit up a teeny bit if she burped after her milk .. I think its just a natural reaction sometimes.
Sometimes now a teeny bit of yogurt can come up if she burps after it .. funny child .. but it doesn't sound like a reaction as nothing else has set her off .. and it wouldn't be a tiny bit I wouldn't have thought .. it would have been a lot more and she would have been in pain xx

I would try her on it again and see how she reacts since this was first time.
Amara had a reaction to cow's milk when I introduced it at 12 months but hers was not related to an intolerance with lactose. Her eczema flared up really badly and when I suspected it was that, I stopped and put her back on breast milk until I researched my options. Since I wasn't totally comfortable with soy, I tried her with goat's milk first as I read good things about it. It worked and she did not flare up with it.

Well I just got a call from daycare and she threw up! They said a lot. She hasn't had any more cows milk, but she had more yogurt last night. Yogurt has never given her a problem, though. They said it was chunky. She stopped spitting up a few months ago. I'm just confused at this point. Surely it couldn't be the milk still? Maybe it is all completely unrelated to the milk. She isn't feverish or anything. She is otherwise fine. She hasn't had anymore gas pain, although she is waking up more than usual overnight.
I'm not convinced it is the milk anymore. We will try it again once the vomiting stops.
Mari -- goats milk is an interesting alternative. Did Amara eventually switch back over to cows milk?

Hmmmmm...I guess you could hold off the dairy for a few days and see how she responds. Could she possibly have a stomach bug that coincided?
As for switching back to the cow's milk, even though she's outgrown the allergy I have continued to use the goat's milk because it does not have the mucus enzyme and with going to playschool and so many colds around, I have found that she has never had a problem with a lot of mucus. Could just be coincidence..
But to answer your question, I used to be able to give her a glass of cow's milk every now and then but recently I tried it and she tasted it and told me she did not like it. I tried her twice. It seems as though she can now differentiate the taste.
I was told to try mixing the cow's milk with vanilla and cinnamon to see if she will take it but I haven't tried that option as yet.

Mucus enzyme? What is that about? I've never heard of that.

I think she may have a stomach bug? Lilyan wasn't feverish with her stomach bug and she would act fine between her throw ups. Dairy isnt good for sour bellys anyway, so backing off of those is probably a good idea. Maybe try some things from the BRAT diet and give her some juice to help keep her hydrated. Those are my suggestions, I hope she feels better!!

Candace -- our family has been sick with something or another for the past week, so a stomach bug certainly wouldn't surprise me! I didn't know you could have a stomach bug without other symptoms.
