Jack was born last Tuesday, July 22 at 9:34pm. He weighed 5lbs 8ozs and was 19 inches long. He has a head full of coiffed hair ~ I love him to pieces. We came home on Friday. It's nice to be home but we are definitely in the eating/screaming all day and night phase, so I miss the nurses. Let's hope it's a short-lived phase

Jack's Birth Story

I had been having pre-labor on and off for a couple of weeks. I would get crampiness/mild contractions for a few hours at a time and then they would fizzle out. When I went to the doctor at 39 weeks, I was 0 cm, 0 % effaced and very disappointed.

On Tuesday (his birth day), I had my 40 week appointment at 2:00pm. I was 1 cm and 25% effaced and my doctor stripped my membranes. Then he asked if everything was okay, and I mentioned that his movement seemed slightly decreased since yesterday. He decided to do a NST in the office. It showed that everytime I had a mild contraction, his heart-rate would decrease. They sent me quickly over to the hospital to have a more detailed NST done. They said, "don't panic, but don't stop to go home to get your bags either." Okay, I panicked!@

On the monitors at the hospital, they did not detect any decels of his heart, but there wasn't sufficient accelerations either. So they sent me downstairs to have an u/s to check him out better. While we were waiting for the u/s room to open up, something changed in my body. It was like I sensed some urgency or something, and I started having stronger contractions. By the time we got to u/s (around 5:00pm), I was really starting to be in pain. The nurses had just assumed I was having the typical crampiness pre-labor, but by this time she was watching my face change during contractions and decided to check me in. The doctor came by to read the reports and decided not to do an emergency c-section because Jack looked to be stabilized. But they were going to keep me until they could figure out what was going on.

By the time they got me to my room (around 6:30pm) I was having serious contractions. they checked me and I was 3-4 cm. I labored on the ball, in the bed and squatting for a couple of hours and then I started to get a little panicky. Everything seemed to be happening so fast, I still wasn't sure what was going on with Jack. I had monitors all over me and an IV, making it very hard to get around, and I was feeling the pain really compounding. I asked for a shot of Nubain around 8:30pm. It was heaven! It calmed me down enough to refocus. I was 5cm and 100% effaced.

I had maybe 10 contractions spaced about 4 mins after the Nubain, and then I just felt the overwhelming urge to push. They checked me and it burst my water. I was 10 cm. I pushed once and brought the head down and then they gave me some Lidocaine to numb me. I pushed again and his head was out, and again for his shoulders. He was born at 9:34pm. Then it got emotional. The doctor looked up at me and said, "your little boy has a guardian angel." He had a true, tight knot in his umbilical cord. This is why he weighs only 5 1/2 lbs. He is all there, with long fingernails and eyebrows, but just a small version. He is very lucky to be here, and we have thanked god so many times for keeping him safe and for telling my body to get him out safely and quickly!

Now it's feed, feed, feed to fatten him up...
