On Thursday April 10th, I went in for my weekly OB appointment. I had protein in my urine and had high blood pressure. So I had blood drawn and was scheduled for an appointment on Monday.
At my appointment on Monday, it was discovered that I had gained 11 pounds over the weekend so my doctor told me to go home and get my things and meet him at the hospital.
Once at the hospital, the doctor had a few questions regarding my bleeding disorder, so he didn't induce me immediately. I was hooked up to a monitor where it was discovered that I was already having contractions on my own. These pains had been with me for days, so I had been having contractions all weekend!! Anyways, at about 8 pm, 4 hours after we got there, a pill was given to me to induce labor. I took it and immediately started having contractions that were more intense and closer together. My cervix was checked at about midnight and I didn't have any changes (no dialation). My doctor decided it would be good for me to rest, so I had a liquid dinner and went to sleep. I continued to have intense contractions.. so sleep wasn't an option for me.
They were about 2 minutes apart, lasting about a minute and a half. As the night grew on, they became more and more intense. At 5 am, as I was being checked on by a nurse, my water broke! At this point I was in full blown active labor. I could no longer talk or concentrate on anything except the pain. At 8 am, my cervix was checked and I was two centimeteres dialated, woo hoo!! Pitocin was given to me to induce the labor further, and at this point I was vomitting from the pain.
I started to lose my vision (Toxemia) at about 11 am, so my cervix was checked again. Two centimeteres. I continued to be in labor, and every cervix check showed that I was barely even dialated. The pain was so intense that I just sat on the end of the bed and moaned and started talking.. but not making sense. I threw up Jello all over a nurse, oops! I was delirious with pain. At this point, I had been in labor for about 18 hours (not including the contractions I had on my own in the beginning) and had not progressed at all beyond two centimeters. We discovered why when my doctor did a very painful cervix check.
He found a small mass that he thought was blocking the baby from dropping into the birth canal, which was preventing my cervix from dialating. So even though I was in hard core labor... nothing was happening. He said "Okay, we're going to have to do a c-section." and explained that there was a large mass in the way preventing the birth of the baby. He said it was a tumor, and probably was not cancerous, but would send it to a lab to get tested.
So Daryl put on the blue scrubs, I got shaved, and down the hall we went. During the c-section, the doctor was unsure as to whether or not he could save my ovaries or fallopian tubes, but after working for a while, he was able to cut the tumor out without having to cut anything else out (Thank you god!!). Our baby girl Charly Ellen, was born on April 15th, at 3:27 pm, weighing 8 lbs exactly, 19 and a half inches long.
