Well on November 6th I noticed I was having on and off contractions. Around 5:30 they started to pick up and I started timing them. At around 7 we realized they were painful, 5 minutes or less apart, and lasting anywhere from 1-2 minutes so we called the on call doctor who said to come into the hospital.
We got to the hospital and got registered where they asked me all the fun questions they needed to ask and got me hooked up for monitoring. The doctor come in after an hour or so and checked my cervix and I was 1 cm dilated but 80% effaced so he said we could go ahead and have a baby! Pitocin was started around 12:15 am. I was so tired and the contractions were starting to pick up so they gave me some pain meds and something to help me sleep. My mom and sister arrived at the hospital around 6:00 am. The contractions were definitely picking up and getting wose but the doctor didn't come in to check me at all. At 11 am, I was in major pain with awful contractions and we were STILL waiting on the doctor to be checked. The nurse decided to check me and I was 5 cm and 100% effaced. When she went in, she also pulled out my mucous plug and though the nurse said she didn't, she also broke my water. I was pretty much screaming at this point through the contractions. They hurt so bad and we had asked for an epidural at 11. The anesthesiologist finally came in at 12 to start the epidural. The epidural itself didn't hurt but it took about 20 minutes to get it in because I was contracting so frequently. Once it was in though, it was great!!!
At 3pm the nurse decided to check me again and low and behold...10 cm and 100% effaced!!! She went to get ready for me to start pushing. She also noticed when she checked me that there was some meconium. She warned me that they would take the baby right away to make sure she didn't swallow any meconium. We pushed for 2 long hours and at 5:20 pm, Addison Claire was born wriggling and screaming her lungs out! They did take her right away. DH didn't get to cut the cord and it took about 20 minutes for me to see my doctor for the first time. I also had a second degree tear that had to be stiched up.
I am really proud of myself for making it as far as I did without the epidural. All in all, it was a wonderful experience giving birth but not one that I'm in any rush to do again any time soon!!!
Addison had high billirubin levels at 10 hours old so she had to be under the photo therapy lights for about 24 hours. We were released on the 9th when she was 48 hours old.
