(After saying grace)

Lucy: What's a blessing?

Mommy: It's like a gift, or something good in your life. Like, having our bunnies is a gift, right?

Lucy: Yes.

Mommy: And our goats.

Lucy: Yes.

Mommy: And your little brother.

Lucy: Pppphhhttt.

Haha! To her credit, she did list Leigh, Mommy and Daddy as blessings at least. So anyway, I was wondering, what do you say to your kids when saying grace? (If you say grace that is) We keep ours short and sweet, usually letting the girls say it for us.

We say:
Thank you Father.
Thank you Father.

For our food.
For our food.

Many, many blessings.

So cute!

We say the traditional Catholic grace before meals: "Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord, Amen."

Lily makes up her own bedtime prayer and she usually says something like "Thank you, God, for my family and friends, especially (insert whomever she had lots of good times with recently). Please keep us safe and protected, Amen."

We only say grace at Daryl's family or my family's house. My family just says thank you for this food and those around the table to receive it. Daryl's family asks to bless the food to nourish our bodies, and bless the hands that have lovingly prepared it.

We talk about the things from our day that we are thankful for each night at dinner, and what we have learned from the day's activities

We're trying to get better about saying grace at dinner time. It usually is something along the lines of: Thank you, Jesus for this food. Bless it to our bodies, and bless our time together as a family. Amen.

Bedtime prayers happen every night, and begin with me saying: Thank you Jesus for this day, and then listing a few things that we did during the day that we enjoyed (ie: thank you for our walk in the sunshine, thank you for bubble baths, etc). Josiah chimes in with what he is thankful for, and we end by saying, "Thank you for Daddy, Thank you for Mommy, but most of all, Thank you for Josiah. Amen".

At meals (I am trying to get her to say this each time) i stick with what I recited as a little kid. "God is great, God is good, thank you for this daily food. AMEN"
At night, Thea usually wants me to tell her the prayer and she repeats it so sometimes I used a kids prayer book she has but usually I just say a simple prayer that includes being thankful for people and things in our life, and watching over us and working hard to be good and do the right things with His help.

Side note, we went to Subway last week after Mom's group with one of the childcare workers and our AWANA teacher. one lady says to Thea, "Let's say grace". Thea says, "Grace." We never call it that! LOL so she just said the word to her. Then she was relly confused when we tried to explain that grace meant the prayer. I don't think it helps that Grace is our dog's name.

LOL About Thea and "Grace!" Jonah gets confused sometimes because at my parent's house we say "let's say grace" and at my in-laws' they say "Shall we bless it" So sometimes he does not quite know what is going on. Also at my in-laws, they fold their arms and bow heads, and at my parents house we either hold hands or raise our hands, or fold our hands. It must be confusing for children trying to figure out the social rules for this custom, when just about everyone prays differently!
