I know the article alludes to this being just a marketing ploy to attract a younger audience, and I'm sure that's part of it. But Disney doesn't seem to have a problem marketing princess stuff to girls of any age, even with their older princesses. Just ask my daughters! Plus, she's not the first young princess - there's the Little Princess, who of course is not a Disney creation. I like that they focus on being beautiful inside. If only all the princesses weren't so beautiful outside, too, and were more like regular people.

Frankly I'm getting sick of princesses and the boatload of crappy Princess™ stuff that floods the market after every movie. I'm trying to turn my daughters' attention away toward other things. It's working fairly well. It helps that Lucy is too timid to watch any of the movies (they've seen Cinderella, but that's all).

I am excited about Pixar's Brave, which the article mentions.

Not on FaceBook so I can't see it. But I will say Thea is really into Tangled and has the movie and ONE Rapunzel doll. They do push them all pretty hard through marketing, but we just don't focus on it one way or the other. Thea likes to dress up and say she is a beautiful princess but she knows she is always beautiful. She also likes being a pirate, so I think there is no harm done if the child(ren) and parents don't fixate just on the appearance part. One big thing Thea likes about Rapunzel is that she likes to paint.
I found another article about this new princess and it says she is the daughter of a commoner who's mom marries a king. Disney says that this is for kids ages 2 to 7 and will focus on issues liking getting along with siblings and being 'kind and generous'. If this is true than it might be better than some of the princess falling in love with the boy type storylines.
And I am looking forward to Brave too. Thea says she wants to see it so maybe we will check it out in the theater...

Ehh...I'm not a big Disney princess fan, but my girls are. My SIL bought Lily the ultimate collection thing with like 8 Disney Princess dolls (the ones like Barbie) for Christmas and she loves it. I don't think it is necessary to bring out Sofia as a princess for younger kids...I know my girls don't care if she's for their age group or Cinderella is, they're just going to like what they like.

Both girls love Rapunzel (from Tangled) the most. Lily wants to grow her hair out like hers We don't actually watch many of the princess movies, but they learn about them from their friends, etc.

I get irked that most Disney movies that are supposed to show other cultures (ie: Aladdin or Mulan) have a lot of racial stereotypes, etc.

My niece is EXTREMELY into the Disney Princesses. Eve likes them just as well as she loves anything else, but she is not even two yet so I don't know if that will change or not. My sister and I don't mind, and we're always buying each other's kids princess stuff. I guess it's because *we* really liked the princess movie. Our grandparents moved relatively close to Disney, so we went quite often. They didn't have a Princess brand back then, but the characters in the movies were very popular attractions there. The castle also did not have anything inside of it. I was SO disappointed when I learned that LOL. I am planning on taking the kids to Disney in a few years, and I will do the whole "princess for a day" package with Eve- and Jonah if he wants, I guess LOL

As for this new show, I kind of like it if they show topics like getting along with siblings and being beautiful on the inside etc. I think it is something that both of my kids will like. I am not sure if we'll be able to find out though because Daryl announced that he is cutting cable as of today

I do wish that they would market something towards boys as far as chivalry, inner beauty, etc. Jonah really likes the new Nick Show, Mike the Knight, but he likes it mostly because the little sister's name is Evie LOL It is a cute show though, and I wish there were more like it. I wouldn't care if he liked princesses, but they just don't appeal to him all that much.

Jordin's VERY much into Disney princess. Her favorite is Ariel. So much that she'd go around telling people that she was having a baby sister named Ariel when I was pregnant. She was a little off cause I had a boy in August, but it was so funny when she'd tell ppl that.
Effervescence likes this.

I appreciate the growth in Disney's portrayal of young women over the years. When you compare the shallow character development in the earlier princesses you can't help but be a little let down. Since then, they have evolved into some pretty powerful gals. My fave is Mulan

I love Disney movies. I'm excited to see what this one is all about
