DH and I are discussing things now...
I don't want them destroyed if we have "left over" but not sure how I feel about donating. You have no idea who they go to? So you could have a couple kids wondering around biologically and not have any clue? or wonder if they implanted or not? Can you donate them and ship them to a known recipient?
I am sure this has been discussed here but I wanted ladies I "knew" to reply.

If we had any (which we don't) and we were done with babies we decided we would transfer our embies back to my womb at a time when they couldn't' implant. As sad as that sounds that was the plan. If something happened and we both died in an accident then we were donating them to a friend that I know that has been ttc for 6 years.

I was fine with donating them but we used DE. DH struggled with the entire decision but now we never have to make it.

Don't count on having snowbabies. I know you see on here that it happens but as you can see even with using a 25 year old donor with lots of eggs we still had non to freeze. Also even if you do lots of times they don't make the thaw.

2 years ago I worried about the same things. Then I decided I just needed to take it one step at a time. It is good to discuss it though.

Maybe I am over-thinking or over stressing you think?
I tend to do that when I am frustrated and feeling out of control.

No I don't think you are over thinking... It def needs discussed but I wouldn't stress you or DH out about making a decision today on what to do "if". Sometimes "if" never happens. I would have bet money that we would have had extras specially using DE. A proven DE with the last couple having twins and frosties. The "if" didn't happen though. I believe God gives us what we can handle.

The first time we had no frosties, so it wasn't an issue. I think they did a too supressing protocol on me though (that's another story)....but this time we had 2 that went to freeze! Why couldn't that have happened last time! What I wouldn't have given to have those frosties!

So, I am also dealing with this at the moment. I will be 38 when I have this baby. DH and I had to decide before hand what to do. After a year, they are moved from our RE to a long term holding company called reprotech. If we had another girl this time, I would definitely consider transferring the 2 in hopes to give Mike a son.

If we pay the annual premium (60$ a month) we're fine, we can keep them indefinitely.

If we both die, we have gifted them to friends of ours that want children. They live in the same town and I don't *think* I could watch my baby grow up ...

I definitely do not want them destroyed. I thought about doing what Gretchen is too, putting them back when they can't implant.

If we don't pay the annual premium, we opted to donate them to another couple. If someone is willing to want donor eggs, they obviously REALLY want to be a parent and have exhausted all other options, so I know that baby, if it resulted in that, would be in a wonderful home.

I hope that helps. Obviously they want you to have a couple frozen eggs, in case the fresh cycle doesn't work...but it not uncommon to not have any left over.

Good luck with your decision!

We have 1 frostie. If we are successful this round of IVF (I'll know today) I'll be putting it back about a year after the baby(ies) is/are born to see if we can get another. if not - we are done. if so - awesome. If something happens to dh and I - we will be destroying it It makes me sad to think that a perfectly good embryo, that could become my baby would be destroyed... ya know?

I've know people who have had no frosties - and I have know people who have had up to 10. So - its really luck of the cycle in my opinion.

We had 5 frosties and will be using 2 for this FET, unless the 2 don't survive the freeze, then if course it will be more. We will keep any leftovers for a second attempt for another baby/babies in the future.

We had to make all our decisions prior to starting IVF. We decided to discard our leftovers. It makes me mad that we have to do that, but I don't think I would want some stranger with our baby. Just the thought is kinda weird. I know there are many people that truly need them, but I would rather "know" who the person was instead of it going to anybody. Since all of my friends have babies or can easily conceive, we also decided to discard the embryos if something happened to both if us. We also had the option of donating them for stem cell research, but that concept was a little weird too.

We are in the other camp, people open to receiving and in fact its our 2nd option if TTC with our own eggs doesn't work. We can't do IVF again and if it doesn't happen with low tech options, we'll move to donor embryo. We can't afford donor eggs and we are not attempting adoption again.

For us, donor embryo is the same emotional journey to being open to adopt without any of the awful ending that could happen to us again. We aren't willing to risk another failed adoption. But I can clearly carry a pregnancy, so donor embryo is perfect for us.

See and if I knew who it was going to I would feel at peace with it. But not knowing? I dunno. I had a very hard childhood and thats my worst fear for my children.
But then again I hate anyone to have to go through this but worse because they need a donated embryo.

It's totally possible to know who you donate to and choose an open relationship if you wanted to as well. There are plenty of programs where you only decide to donate if you've approved the couple and some go as far as meeting, choosing what the relationship will look like, etc

Since we're planning on a donor embryo cycle, I've looked a lot into this. Depending on your clinic you can do open or closed donation, like you can with adoption. A lot of the clinics just do closed but not all of them. However there are also agencies that approach it more like adoption than just donation. You can look at profiles and stuff, find out who they go to, know if it was successful, gets pictures or letters from your bio kid, etc like with open adoption. You can also donate them to a particular couple you found on your own without an agency. There's legal paperwork to sign over ownership and all that and normally they would come to your clinic and just do your FET with their body. They don't normally like to ship them from what I understand.
