I hope everyone is doing great and would appreciate everyone's advice and opinion. I would like to know how many embryos you had transferred, and how many stuck?

This is my 1st IVF cycle, and it looks like we will be doing a 5 day transfer. I'm 34 but will be 35 in less than 2 months, and we are trying to decided on the number of embryos to transfer. My doctor usually transfers 2 for patients under 35, and 3 for patients 35. He is letting me decide if we are going to transfer 2 or 3 embryos. We have had so much heartache ttc...I just want a healthy baby.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have learned so much from you guys.

I have never had more than 2 embryos to transfer, so I haven't faced the decision of 3.

Did your RE talk to you about selective reduction on triplets? I got that speech & it scared the daylights out of me. I don't know that I could go through that, even understanding the risk of pre-mature birth & complications.

With a 5 day transfer, you have a better chance of them sticking. I know that I'd rather have multiples than a BFN. It's a very hard decision. Did your RE give you any guidance on what he suggests???

Hey Jennifer, I'm 28 and we did 3 on a 3 day transfer. This partially had to do with the fact that we had 25 eggs, like 18 fertilized (mostly with icsi) but we didn't have a lot make it to day 3 that were quality. We had 3 that were 8 cells so that's what we transferred. I'm almost 16 weeks and we've only got 1 baby I know day 5 embryos are a little more likely to stick as well, but I was ok with it to because the chances of triplets is so low. I hope this isn't confusing, I'm using my phone and can't really read back what I wrote. Good luck!

Hey Jennifer! I'm sure you know, but we transferred 2 - 5 day blasts. I'm pregnant with twins now! But, we did that with a frozen cycle, where your body is a lot less stressed from everything you go through. We only transferred 1 - 5 day blast with the fresh cycle and that ended up with a BFN.

It's a tough decision between 2 or 3. You should ask yourself the question "are you prepared to care for triplets if all 3 take?".

As Mandy said above about selective reduction, I think that would scare me and break my heart to do. Me being pregnant with twins scares me, but it is a blessing!

And, ditto to what everyone else is saying about better chances with a 5 day transfer. Your chances are better, but again, your body may also be too stressed immediately following ER.

I know this isn't much help, but I'd say just ask yourself that question and base your decision from that. Good luck!

Thanks guys...you are great and have helped me so much.

My husband has always talked about multiples, and he would be thrilled with twins and scared but on cloud 9 with triplets. He has always been Mr. Mom (soccer coach, basketball coach, and volunteers when a male in needed at school. He is even going to chaperone a week long 4 H camp with our son...bless his heart, he has way more patience and kid tolerance than me,lol.) I'm more the realistic person and realize how hard caring for multiples would be. Plus, there is the health concerns, and I could never do selective reduction.

I guess...I'm just hoping to get some sort of idea what my odds or all 3 sticking. If they are relativity low, I think I will take my chances. I'm just so afraid of getting a BFN and dealing with another loss. Thanks again for being here to listen.

My clinic will not txfer 3 unless you have a previous failed cycle or poor quality embryos. If you have 5 day embryos..I'd suggest txferring 2. I've done two Ivf cycles...I txferred 2 each time and got pregnant with one baby each time. I lost this second baby....but I didnt have 5 day embryos, so I, if it was me, would txfer 2.

I hope that helps and best of luck!!!!

Hey Jennifer, I am going through this same decision in my head right now as well. I'll be a month behind you, but it's weighing heavy on me right now too. I have stumbled upon the selective reduction by looking up what happens in utero when a multiple passes on, and I have to agree, I could never think of going through that after all of this.
This is my first and probably only IVF cycle that we will be going through, so I am very tempted to go for 2 transferred. My RE had said that she would feel safe transferring only 1, she had mentioned the chance of identical twins forming from a single transfer....here's an article on it: Does IVF increase the chance of identical (monozygotic) twins? | Reproductive Partners Fertility Blog

So when confronted with that, my Husband got nervous at the thought of 2 being transferred, turning into 3!....I did not marry the same kind of man as you Jennifer! Haha So I am still in limbo, but leaning towards 2. I'd say if you have a willing and loving/supportive partner I'd go for the 3. Good luck and Best Wishes!

Leah..Thanks for your words of wisdom. I appreciate it.

L Marie...Thanks for the article and good luck with your decision. Our insurance will pay $1000 more towards IVF if we only transfer one embryo, but I've had so many BFNs and lost a baby due to an ectopic pregnancy in April....I just want to make sure or at least, do everything I possibility can to finally have our baby. However, I don't think I want three babies, lol.

I think I have decided to transfer 2 embryos if they are high grade, and I will take my chance with 3 if they are poorer quality.

On a side note, my husband and I were walking, and he starts talking about the wait and what the embryos will be doing while they are in the lab for 5 days. He asks me if the office would let him stop by everyday to visit his future babies.lol

Jen...That sounds like a reasonable decision to me. I may be repeating myself here, but one of the girls on here was struggling with the same question and got a response of "would you rather a BFN or twins?" I think all of us would rather twins!!!

Your DH is funny. When we had two embryos in the lab, my DH sent me a little cartoon of two kids in a petry dish saying "Hey Mom, Come and get us. It's boring here in the lab!" He even had the names he likes written on their little bodies. Haha.
It's good to have a sense of humor. Lord knows, it's what gets us thru the tww.

LOL...Mandy and Leah. I'm so thankful that my husband has a sense of humor. Between the stress, hormones, and having to give myself shots with IVF, I'm ready to snap most of the time and he keeps me sane.

Late on this but our clinic does 2 or 3 for my age (36yo). I have never considered transferring 3 so we are going with 2.
One of the other reason to stick with 2 over 3 is the other kids. My boys are 8 &12 and still need raising- especially the soon to be teenager!

i think you made a great choice! Good luck to you!

Late on this as well, but I have done a fresh IVF and a frozen transfer. Both times we transferred 2 5-day blasts. Our fresh cycle we had a singleton, and the frozen cycle resulted in twins. We seriously considered transferring only one, but ended up transferring two because the fear of the BFN was too great.

Good luck with your decision; please let us know how everything turns out!

Sorry, I'm late on this too. But you also need to remember that you have been successfully pregnant. All the reading I did before my transfer looked at age, quality of embryo and past success.

I think 2 is a great decision and I wish you tons of sticky bean dust!

Well Hello! I am sorry I didn't see this sooner. It wasn't so long ago I was having the same dilemma!

We transferred 2 5day blasts. One was a A+ perfect embie. The second was a B-. We also had a third but it was a C Quality and my RE said it wasn't worth transferring and wouldn't make the freeze.

I am 12 weeks pregnant with twins now! We knew we would transfer two because we would rather have twins then a BFN. If that third embie would have made it we would have transferred it too but that is because of my age 43. If I was your age and the third embie made it we would have frozen the little guy.

I think your decision of two is great specially depending on the quality.
Good Luck to you.

BTW - your DH sounds like a sweetie! Mine is the same way and I couldn't be more grateful because I have way less patience too - like you.

Thanks everyone!! It is always so nice having someone with experience sharing advice.

Kayakr, Congrats on twins, and yeah, my husband is pretty awesome. I just hope this cycle works, and I can give him his own child. He is so excited and cute with this whole process. We did our retrieval this morning, and he has asked me at least 20 times today if I thought our babies have been made yet, lol.

I just got a call from the lab and 16 out of 17 eggs fertilized. We have a 3 day transfer set up for Friday at 11:00, but the nurse seemed very confident that we would end up doing a 5 day transfer. I'm so excited and hopeful...please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
