1 C sifted flour
1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
1 t vanilla
1 1/2 C rolled oats
1/2 C shortening
1/2 C sugar
1 egg
1 T water
3/4 C gumdrops (spice) cut into pieces

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt. Add shortening, sugar, egg, water & vanilla. Beat until smooth. Fold in rolled oats & gumdrop pieces. Shape into walnut sized balls. (roll in coconut if desired)
Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 12-15mins. Makes 4 dozen.

YOu know I've seen this recipe a zillion times and never tried it ...

I'll have to check, but this sounds just like the recipe we use.

Personally, we prefer it with cinammon gumdrops (available heartshaped at Valentine's Day) or in a pinch the orange slice gumdrops. We aren't overly fond of the spice ones.

Dh is the only one that eats these cookies in our house.
Cinnamon gumdrops never make it far enough to get into cookies...I love cinnamon hearts/bears
