Our town & surrounding communities were evacuated from our homes due to the recent 08' ice-storm.
I read today's newspaper & on the front page was how a 5 year old girl was raped & that it was caught on tape at the shelter/school.
Apparently the school's surveillance camera caught a 23 year old man take the little girl into the hallway, pull down her pants, push her against the wall & well you get the rest. At first, they had no info. But after pulling the surveillance cameras, found this man doing this. Apparently, this man is a registered sex offender.
The response to this sex offender being in the school from the red cross, police etc., was that they couldn't keep track & that they had a log at the front door for all persons w/ children. Obviously this little girl slipped through the cracks.
They continued to say that they tried to do their best to prevent this sort of actions from happening & that they realized that this is something that does happen, as they have many reports of incidents from the evacuations back from Hurricane Katrina.
I just read this stuff and it makes me sick. Then I feel even more sick thinking how the National Guard, Police & so on told us "mandatory evacuation" and I am so glad that we didn't. Not only couldn't we leave, as we were trapped for a while, but after much thought, w/ the small kids, it made no sense & my DH kept saying "people are weird, I don't trust that & it creep's me out"... well, he was right.
They couldn't keep track of sex offenders or criminals & look what happened, an innocent 5 year old girl was raped & it was caught entirely on tape. Thankfully this guy will be charged but this poor girl had already been traumatized from the storm & now she has to deal w/ this emotional heal for the rest of her life.
thats terrible. I can't believe that. I never go to the shelters when they have them. When San Diego had all the fires and places were evacuated I went to my families up north because I am a big baby and refuse to have to stay like that and be uncomfortable.
