Sean, and I worked all last week on staff at a Cub Scout Day camp. Jonah worked M-W,but he had to work his real job the rest of the week. Robert went and helped as much as he could and Dani tagged along. She is used to being one of the few girls at events like this.

Anyway, yesterday was water day and there was a slip-n-slide for the boys to play on (and staff) and evidently during this time Robert got something in his eye and when he rubbed it, he scratched his cornea. This morning when he woke up, He cane into my room hysterical saying he could not open his eye. His eye was swollen shut and he was in lots of pain. I looked and could and could not see anything in it, so I gave him some advil and to relax a few minutes. Ten minutes later he begins screaming again and says he can't see out of his eye and it hurts really bad. I have one hysterical screaming child on my hands.

I decide there is nothing more that I can do at home and he needs to be seen by a dr and call his dad at work and leave a message and then I call his mom and tell her I am taking him to our local ER here, 10 min from my house. It takes a lot of effort on both my part and the Drs. part to for the Dr to be able to examine Robert's eye, even though I medicated him before we left. His eye is infected from something being in it but he is feeling much better.

I called his mom and let her know what the dr said and sent another message to his dad at work and we headed back home. Time elapsed 1 1/2 hr.

His mom has now called Jonah and cussed him out because I did not drive the 1 hr to her house to pick her up to take her with me to take her to the
ER. She never said anything to me about it, plus I am not riding that far with a child screaming in pain when I can get him help much sooner. If she wanted to be there, she is more that welcome to have someone that she lives with bring her. I did not even go get his dad from work! It was a minor problem, not a major emergency. I just made the decision that this was something that could not wait until the drs office opened up on Monday due to the level of pain he was in. If we had a Urgent Care Center in our area, that is where we would have went. It is rare my kids go to the ER because of my background in EMS. I can handle most things at home.

I'm so sorry Patty!

from the mouth of my DH "What kind of mother wants her child to suffer for TWO hours just so they can be there at the ER with them? That just seems beyond stupid!"

And I happen to agree with him on it. I know it is exactly what I would have done in your position, and L only lives across town. But I'd be heading for the nearest hospital that uses his insurance (which reminds me, we should probably get that information from her..) , she could meet me there.

What a nut case. I agree with Ashley (and her dh) - who would delay a child's care for something minor (but painful) because they need you to come pick them up first?! I'm so sorry you have to deal with that craziness.

That is rediculous. I tell BM about appointments but I don't invite her along unless it is about something she needs to know about. Like last your B stepped in a fire pit with hot coals. We had a nurse camping with us and she told us about how to treat it and that it would be fine until we got to the DR in 2 days. We were 3 hours from the nearest hospital. Well I told BM to come because she would need to know how to treat it when he was there and she made a big freakin deal about it like I should have driven for 3 hours to take him to the Dr when he wasn't saying anything about pain, it wasn't infected and the RN that was with us treated it and kept checking it all weekend.
