Man! I have been really interested in recycling to bring in some extra cash and help the environment at the same time, and never before now have seen a board on JM before now. Wow! The timing is great! Can you ladies please lend your green ears to my following questions, I just need a little direction on how to get started:

-Df and I are TTC, and I have been thinking about cloth diapers but have NO idea about them, except my impression that they are nasty and would use a ton of water to wash, are they really cheaper and how would I use the least amount of plastic possible (I think they use plastic liners or something right?) UPDATE***********saw the post, you guys are thinking like I am hahaha

-Recycling in Texas....we live in Spring, which is just north of Houston, so we have several ?'s here: (1) how in the world do I find out where to take my recycled stuff and what they would pay, (2) how do you recycle, like what constitutes as "plastics", "paper"(does this include junk mail?), I can't think of what other groups there are as classifications so please feel free to indulge me

-how can I save on electricity in these hot spring and summer months - the South is sizzling this time of year, and really most of the year round. outside of sweating to death (fans do not help and we can't open the windows cause we have indoor kitties), what can we do to lessen our energy usage?

-I would love to garden, but have no idea how to get started! I can't even keep a plant alive, even though I talk and sing to them lol. I am very interested in growing my own herbs and vegetables and fruits, but can't afford expensive equipment and need something that makes sense for a residential backyard.

please help

The amount of water used to produce one years worth of disposable diapers for 1 child is 2.3 times the amount of water used to wash cloth diapers for a year. I don't recall the source but trust me, or google it To cloth diaper with the least amount of synthetic materials you would want to use cotton, bamboo or hemp flats or prefolds with wool covers and no wool is not itchy and it doesn't leak Come visit the Cloth Diapering Board!

You would contact your City, Public Works or Municipal Waste Dept - likely whoever you pay your water and/or waste bill to.

Strip down when you get home Seriously, when hubby and I lived in New Orleans, we wore next to nothing at home. Get screens for those windows and open them up. Fans will help if you can get a cross-breeze going.

I am very interested in growing my own herbs and vegetables and fruits, but can't afford expensive equipment and need something that makes sense for a residential backyard. When I started out gardening, I went to the library and checked out a bunch of books on the things I wanted to grow. It doesn't take much. Seeds are cheap, you can compost your own food scraps to make rich food for your soil, and you can make your own seedling greenhouse with an egg carton and an upside down clear ziploc bag over it. Hmm, we don't have a Gardening board here on JM. Maybe we should have a subforum on this board for Green Thumb Mommies! I will request it!
