I think #1 is buying from a local farmer. #2 is growing your own.
Personally, I find "organic" food to be a giant scam.
First of all, a true organic farm actually causes
more enviromental impact to the earth because it takes more room and more resources to produce the food.
Second, an organic farm may not be as "organic" as you may think. For the farm to be accredited, all they have to do is use "natural" pesticides.. cocaine is natural, just for reference.
Third, Buying Earth's Best baby food? Annie's Organic peanut butter? They are a big box brand company just like Pepsi, just like Kraft.. just like anything else. Buying an organic food item at the grocery store does zero for the enviroment because that company is just as wasteful and huge as the non-organic company on the same shelf.
And finally, it's so much more expensive. A gallon of milk is around $3 here. A QUART of organic milk is $4. That's $16 for a gallon of organic milk.
Save your money, save your time, grow your own veggies or look into a co-op farm in your area. We have bought into a co-op for $120 a year, and every four weeks we receive a large box of eggs, milk, vegetables and fruit that is not from some big boxed corporation that slaps the "organic" label on their food just to be able to quadruple the price.
Sorry for the rough opinion but I feel really strongly about this and I just visited the heated debates board.
