Would you ever name a child after a character that you fell in love with in a book or story? I've been thinking about the name Esmé if I have a girl, after the little girl in "For Esmé with love and squalor" by J.D. Salinger....I read this story last year for a college course and its my favorite short story ever, and I absolutely fell in love with this little girl...plus shes a little blonde girl which is what I would most likely be having (both the father and I are very blonde!) Alot of people are telling me that they think the name is pretentious, and too French...Have any of you named a child after a character from a book? Thanks!
-Rebecca
p.s. here is a link to the story....if you havent read it you should!

Hey... I think the name Esmé is beautiful! I wouldn't worry about what other people say about it. The baby is yours... you have the right to name him or her don't you? Anyways... I haven't named my kids a literary character... but I did name them after fictional characters on television and movies!

There is a mother in the group that I am that named her daughter Esme. I had never heard of it and she was explaining where the name came from and I so want to read the story! I think it is a beautiful name!

Xander's name we got from... (yes, I'll admit I have geeky tendencies) Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The character's name was Alexander but everyone called him Xander. I just thought it was one of the coolest names I ever heard and that's how Xander got his name. Lucas I got from a character from the movie Empire Records. Heh, they were both my favorite characters from their respective shows.

Well, I never considered it because my favorite writer is Agatha Christie. Somehow I don't think "Hercule" is a name I want for my son
But I like the name Esme and it must be great to be named after such a beautiful character.

I think that's a very nice name!

When I was in college, I knew a guy named Bilbo. And yes, his mom named him after Bilbo from The Hobbit/LOTR. It sounds like a social death sentence, but he was really cool/nice and nobody made fun of him just because of his name.

Esme is a beautiful name -- it shouldn't matter where it came from, it's perfect.

hun its your baby name it what you want.....and it is a beautiful name......if we have a boy this time he will be named after a character from one of my fav books......id love to tell ya the name be we have decided to keep it a secret....lol.....hubby is afraid someone will steal it...lol......my oldest is named after a character from an old show called earth2.....i got a lot of for flak for naming her tru....his family told me that i couldnt name her that (like they had a say-so ) because it wasnt in a baby name book.....and then with my second it was the same because i decided (didnt really give my hubby a choice) to name her rienn(ryan) after one of my hubby and i's close male friends.....but in both cases i just told them to mind their own business that i was having a baby with their son not them and that i really didnt give @#$# what they thought (dont really get along to well with hubbies fam can ya tell).....all in all hun do what makes you happy....and if they bring up the whole kids will make fun of her for her name....let me tell ya my name is kristine and i got made fun of....kids can be mean and it doesnt matter what your name is they will find a way to twist it into something mean...so on that note sorry for the novel and i say go for it.
