Fair or unfair?

According to an article in PC World, Penguin Group is ending their agreement with Overdrive, an online ebook distributor, to make library downloads to be more difficult.

Publishers are afraid that "the ready download-ability of library ebooks could have an adverse effect on sales."

For now, this means that Penguin won't supply any new ebooks or audiobooks to libraries.

According to the article, Random House is the only major publisher that gives libraries unrestricted access to purchase and loan ebooks. Other publishers place restrictions on how many times a book can be downloaded or when new books become available. Simon & Schuster and Macmillan don't lend ebooks at all.

How long before other publishing companies follow suit?

i think the publishers have to find ways to adapt bc if they make it too difficult, people will gravitate towards publishers that are easier. as more and more people look foe ebooks, libraries will spend more of their budgets there and companies with favorable policies will see more of that purchasing power
