I noticed a few of you have said that you feel compelled to finish a book once you've started it.
Who here does this?
Who here doesn't care and will abandon a book if it's not keeping their interest?
I used to be like this when I was younger, but I think doing an English Lang & Lit degree beat it out of me. Having to read stuff like James Joyce's Ulysses....lol. There were several books I was supposed to read right through that I never finished (and still got a 2:1). Ever since then if I'm not enjoying a book I just don't bother!!
I tend to waffle on that point. If a book doesn't "catch" me in the first few chapters then I'll sometimes push through to see if things improve in the middle before ditching it. Most of the time I finish the book I start. There have been one or two that I just couldn't get through.
I used to feel compelled to finish everything but my reading time is so limited now that I will not finish if I don't like it--I have more important reading to do Sometimes I will skim if I want to see the story progression but don't want o actually read all of it
