I've had a Jansport for 3 semesters, as well as using it for my carry-on on many flights. It's not the small Jansport. It has a large section, medium section, and a zipper pocket. It also has a pocket at the top of the large section, that you can store your phone or iPod in, and then it has a hole to route your headphones to you.
For my foster kids, I always get PBK bags and lunch bags. They're really sturdy, not too expensive, and they can really customize what they want. I get every foster kid a bag, most have nothing to carry their few belongings in. So their pack goes with them when they leave.

Mine is Dh's old bag (the thing is like 10 yrs old) its a Kelty bag. It just barely fits my laptop (17.3") in it so thats why I use it lol. Its a good strong bag and I see it lasting quite a while still.
You could always get a little suitcase with wheels...
I actually did that for a whole two days one semester! lol I had one on hand that came with a luggage set I had. I felt like an old lady! I am already so much older than a lot of the students, and that just made me stick out even more!
I use a big professional looking tote bag that I got on clearance at Wilson's leather outlet. I can fit my laptop, a few notepads or slim books plus my wallet, phone, ect. I love it, especially the fact that I can carry it into stores or doctor's appointments without looking out of place.
