My 6 y/o and I will be traveling next week. He's usually in a Nautilus harness, but we'll have a backless booster and a rental car for the trip. Is it safest to put him by the window or in the center? He's tall, so I'd prefer to have him by the window if it's safe (so not to block my RV mirror). I don't know yet if the rental will have side airbags or not. Does that make a difference in his seating?
I wouldn't want him by the window. With a backless booster, there is nothing protecting his head or neck, and I don't want my child's head to slam up against the window/door if we're in a side impact accident. Is there any way you can travel with a highback booster?
If you put him in the center, make sure there is a headrest behind him. It has to at least come up to the top of his ears, no lower. And of course it has to be a shoulder belt, not just a lap belt
If there is no headrest and/or shoulder belt in the middle seat, then he has to go outboard. If there is a headrest AND a shoulder belt in the middle, that is safest for him because he is more vulnerable in a backless booster.
