We only need it to last till about 5-6 months, when we get a convertible seat. We are looking at this because it will be starting to get cooler here shortly after baby is born, and I have enough people to get in the car and to the bus stop in the mornings with having to worry about getting baby into a seat in the car also.
The padding doesn't seem all that great, will it still be alright for 2 hour plus car trips?

It's a very basic seat. It isn't unsafe at all, just doesn't have the extra bells and whistles (softer fabric, comfier padding, etc.) that more expensive seats have. It is a fairly small seat that will be outgrown quickly by most babies. It has a rear harness adjuster, which I find to be a PITA and sometimes leads to more misuse of the seat.
Also, Evenflo requires the handle to be down, behind the infant seat. Plus there must be 1.5-2 inches of clearance between the handle and your vehicle's front seats. That is sometimes an issue, if space is a concern.
