How do you know if your car seat is expired? I feel kind of dumb asking this... Surely I'm missing something obvious?

We bought a Graco Snugride infant car seat second hand (it was in perfect condition and had only been used for one child for less than 4 months) for my first son in Jan of '09, and then used it again in Sep '10 for our second child. Now I'm pregnant again, and I'm wondering if we will need to buy a new seat. I've looked all over the seat and base and cannot find an expiration date, so how do I know? If I'm reading the label correctly, it was manufactured on 12/8/05. What are the recommendations for replacing potentially expired seats??

(Updated)------------------------------

Heh, Guess I should have googled this before posting.. I just found this - Car Seats Have Expiration Dates Too! | Graco Heart to Heart Blog

Looks like the recommendation is 6 years. Time for a new seat!

So, what do you do with old seats? Can they be recycled?

You can do a few things with it.

* You can save it for when Babies R Us has a trade-in event.

* You can cut the harness, dispose of the harness and cover separately, and write "EXPIRED, NOT SAFE" on the shell.

* And (perhaps my favorite), see if a local CPST/Safe Kids would like the seat for training purposes.
