I can't seem to get a solid answer. The packaging says its safe and I know several people who use them but other people have said they are not. They look great for winter and i'd love to get one but am not willing to sacrifice safety. I figured someone here could help me out Ok or not?
Oh and if its not safe, are there any similar products that are?
No, that original style is not safe. If any part of it goes between the child and the car seat, or the child and the harness, it is not safe. A shower cap style cover is safe. It only goes on over the car seat, and doesn't interfere with the child being buckled in at all. This is an example of a safe style:
