I'm hesitant about anything that's aftermarket when it comes to car seats, especially when it comes to things between the seat and the baby. That being said, there are some seats I love but don't love their covers. Are there any reliable places (sites or stores) that make ones that are safe? Would making my own matter as long as there's no added cushion and such?
Ultimately asthetics don't matter when it comes to safety. I'd take a vomit colored car seat that is sage over a gorgeous unsafe seat. Of course if I could have both, I'd love to.
The only covers that are safe are the ones you can buy directly from the car seat manufacturer. Any other cover is not safe, not tested with the car seat, and explicitly prohibited in the car seat manual.
Check their websites or call their customer service numbers. Most seats have different covers available, but a few seats have non-removeable (and therefore non-replaceable) covers. What seat do you own?
I don't own a seat yet. Baby is due in September so I'm just starting to look around. I worked in the pediatric icu a few years back and in working there I became pretty interested in child passenger restraints. It scared the crap out of me when I saw all the tiny things that can make drastic changes to performance of a seat.
My car is pretty decently sized, I doubt I'll have trouble finding a seat that fits. I'd like an infant carrier at first, but would like it to last as long as possible before I switch. Definitely going to keep the kiddo RF as long as possible. Come on 4 years!!!
Yes, definitely check the manufacturer's websites! We have a Sunshine Kids Radian XTSL for our oldest...we bought it in Nitro (red) and then got the Spring (green floral) cover for it later because I thought it was pretty. Having an extra cover came in handy during potty training
