I have been looking for the national standards for booster seats, and can not find anything that gives me a straight answer.
My almost 8 year old daughter is getting made fun of because we still make her ride in a booster seat, none of her classmate have rode in a booster seat since they were 3 or 4 years old. People in this area put their kids in booster seats around 2.5-3 years and quit using them shortly aft that. I know she is the only one in her class to ride in a booster seat but I drive A LOT and do not feel safe with her not in one. I commute to work with both of my babies 30 miles one way. Then after school I have another 20 minute drive to go to the closest town to run errands! The highway I drive on has has several nasty fatality wrecks over the past 4-5 years.
At one point I had heard that a child had to ride in a booster seat till they were 8 yrs old OR 4' 9" tall.
Is this true? She is ready to be out of the seat, but I want her to be safe....HELP!!
Look into your state laws. Most are at least 8. I have my girls in hbb and my oldest is 11. Our van doesn't have side airbags, so I try to keep her safe. Most children need to be in a booster after 8. It depends on the vehicle. Does she pass the 5 step seat belt check? I'll permit my girls to drive boosterless in DHs sedan like twice a yr when he takes them somewhere alone. They fit perfectly and he doesn't go on the freeway with them. I was beyond upset when my DH let my in-laws take my kids an hr on the freeway without their boosters 2 yrs ago. My younger dd was barely legal.

Child restraint Required : <5
Adult seat belt permissible: 6-12, >or equal to 40lbs in rear seat
I believe national recommendation is: 4ft 9 or when the carseat belt fits properly across the chest and lap, or possibly until age 12.
If you want you could always follow one of the strictest states law. Tennesse & Wyoming are two of the most strictest an there laws state:
Child restraint required:<1 (or <20) in rear-facing infant seat; 1 - 3 (and >20) in forward-facing infant seat; 4 - 8 (and <4'9") in booster seat; <8 (and <4'9") in rear seat if available; rear seat recommended for 9 - 12
adult seat belt permissable: 9 - 15 (or <12 and >4'9")
I hope that helps

The 5 step test is based on physics, not law. Laws are rarely best practice. She should remain in a booster until you can say yes to all 5 questions on the 5 step test. I would help her understand why she's still in the booster and how to handle her friends.
