Hello! New to the board and thought this forum was most suitable. I am 32 and 11 1/2 weeks pregnant with my second child.

I had my first OB visit at 8 weeks and my second is scheduled for next week. I didn't have a great first impression of the practice- very large and not a lot of personalized attention.

I started researching birthing centers as an option. I feel more comfortable with the holistic approach and delivering in a home like environment as opposed to the sterile environment of a hospital. The savings are pretty significant, too- even with PPO insurance, I still have to pay 20% of facility (or hospital) charges and a $750.00 deductible.

Has anyone delivered in a birthing center or considering one as an alternative?

I would greatly appreciate your feedback!

Leigh

I had my first in a plain old hospital. Labor and delivery in one room, than transfer to another one for the duration of my stay. I'm not sure on the rest, though. My last three were born at the birthing center in the hospital. It was very nice. The room was very aesthetically pleasing, and the fact that I stayed in the entire room the whole time, with my child, was a huge plus for me. But it was definitely a hospital setting. The necessary equipment was standing by in the room just in case, and even though it was full of machinery until the birth, it was cleared out and looked just like a studio apartment sans kitchen.

My last was born at home. I thought it was wonderful and can't imagine going back to a dr or hospital wiht a birth. I love midwifery. If you are willing to forgo and epidural then I say go for it! I checked out a brithing center for this birht and would have used it but have since decided on another home birth. You will find midwives who do birhtcenter and homebirths are far more in tune with the woman rather than looking at us a patient to practice on.....

My kids were all born in hospitals. I do not know of any birthing centers where I live. I think home birthing would be neat. But, I would be too chicken. I think I would just feel safer at a hospital in case of an emergency. But, I look up to the ones that do it their own way!
