I bought a second-hand pack n' play for upstairs for the few weeks before Zachary is in his crib. I pulled it out of the bag, and while it's clean it REEKS of ciggarrette smoke! OMG there is NO way I can have that beside my bed. I'm afraid that it's beyond Febreeze. I'm going to try, but I'm not holding out hope.
Any other ideas? I could set it outside and hope that it airs out. I only paid $35 for it, but I'm frustrated that I couldn't tell that it stunk before I bought it.

well, if you get a spray bottle with half water and half white vinegar and spray it down, and let it air outside in the sun... that should help. You may want to fabreez it afterward

Maybe try the Clorox anywhere spray then let it air out and I'd wipe it down with hot water after too because I still don't like any kind of cleaner near baby...

having it air out outdoors will really help. maybe lemon juice and water in a spray bottle would do some good, too?

I would toss it. If the smoke is really set in there I don't think anything can help it.

I also vote for the water / vinegar mixture. sharethissmile2 maybe right, but it's worth it to try airing it out first.

well I tried Renuzit because that's what I had but the combination of smells gave me an instant headache. I packed it back up and am going to try to set it up outside and then try the vinegar/water trick. If not I'll just take it back to the consignment shop and reconsign it. I have a brand new pack n' play but was looking for a bassinett for the bedroom when I saw this other pack and play and figured it would "work" although it takes up so much room in my bedroom. They have a really nice bassinett at the consignment shop now so I might just consign the one and buy the other one (after smelling it of course!).

They do sell sprays that are just for eliminating the smell of smoke. I'm a former smoker, so we used to use it a lot in my car. I can't remember the name of what we used now though. I bought it at Walmart.

My MIL bought a pack and play that smelled like smoke and no matter what she tried, she couldn't get the smell out. I'd give some of the suggestions a shot and hopefully one of them will work.

The problem is that the smoke has soaked into the padding as well, and even treating the fabric on the surfaces isn't going to get it all out.

I ended up taking it back to the consignment shop and reconsigning it....If it sells I'm out about $8...better than tossing it.
I just knew I couldn't get over the smell no matter what I tried. I'd always know that it was in a smoking house...I grew up in a smoking house and the smell still bothers me to this day and gives me an instant headache and asthma symptoms. It's not worth it to me.

I HATE cigarette smoke. I grew up with my grandma and grandpa and they were both smokers, I hated smelling like I was a constant smoker when I couldn't even stand the smelly things. When I got with DH he smoked, and before we moved in together I told him he can either live on his own, or stop smoking. He decided to stop smoking which made me happy because its so unhealthy and makes gross teeth and breath.

Yeah, that's gross. I wouldn't want the baby sleeping in it if all of the padding smells of smoke. Good for you for taking it back!
