Ugh! I know I've done this whole potty training twice before, but every time I feel like "How do you get them to start?" Once they've gone on the potty once or twice I find the whole thing pretty easy, yes there are accidents, but who cares. But, getting LJ to go the first time is proving a pain. I looked up some ideas today and think I have some ideas on things I haven't tired that I can, but how did you start for those who are done or at least making good progress, cuz we're making none!?

I sit in the bathroom and read books to Jamie while she sits on the potty. She gets so into the books she will go and not realize it.

I waited until Ana would tell me as soon as sheŽd peed in her nappy. Then I just put her in pants ALL the time. She would not sit on the plastic potty, so I got a training seat for the toilet. Every time she wet her pants I sat her on the toilet and gave her a raisin. I set a timer for 10 minutes and just constantly sat her on the toilet. Eventually she weed and I gave her an M&M. It took 2 days to realise that a wee = an M&M!! SheŽs been 100% trained with about 1 accident a fortnight since about september. The first 48 hours were horrendous!

We're only day trained here but I would just ask her if she had to go. Like every five minutes. And if she kept saying no, I'd just put her on the toilet every 15 minutes. It's exhausting but she finally caught on. It took her maybe 1 week of accidents in her pants and maybe 2 week of her pooping her pants (she was too embarrassed to tell me she had to go) but something in her just clicked.

Now if only she'd stay dry overnight...

I didn't ask. I just said, it's time to go. I watched a trick somewhere online and they said to celebrate being dry, so that's what we did with a mini marshmallow. I'd ask him if he was dry, and if he was we'd cheer and dance our way to the bathroom! He'd get a mini marshmallow for being dry. I did this about every 15 minutes for the first few days. If he was wet we'd still go sit on the potty but he wouldn't get the marshmallow and HE would have to take off the underwear. If he peed in the potty he'd get a sticker, tattoo, m&m...whatever (had a little basket and he got to pick). Poop took much longer. I thought he'd never stop pooping in his pants, but I finally figured out when he was going to poop and then made a big deal out of it when he made it to the potty.
the other thing you can do is sit him in the living room in front of the tv on the potty. we had a potty in our living room for weeks!
