And it wasn't what we hoped for.

So at the retrevial they got 21 eggs. The dr was certain that we would be freezing a lot. Well we chose to pay for ICSI just because it wasn't much on top of what we were already paying. So they were able to do ICSI on 19 of the eggs. And today when they reviewed them (or whatever) they determined that only 6 eggs fertilized.

I don't know how great 6 eggs is, but its so dissappointing after having SO many eggs. Anyway, maybe this brings some light as to why we aren't pregnant yet.

But I am glad we did the ICSI.

So the transfer will be Wednesday morning. I am a little down right now, but hopeful that all of you will tell me 6 eggs is still ok.

I know I tell like everyone this - but 6 is a GREAT number!!

With our IVF we had 6 that fertilized and 4 made it to blastocyst stage and were perfect and now we're pregnant with one healthy little girl

ETA: we transferred 2 of them

I know that's not what you had hoped for, but like the other girls have said, it only takes 1 KUP!

I am sure you were hoping for many more eggs to fertilize, but the other girls are right...it just takes one. I will keep cheering for your 6 embies, and I hope they all do wonderfully from this point on!

Thanks Melissa. I know it only takes one, we are just hoping that one comes this cycle.

Can anyone tell me how many they had retreived, fertilize, and essentiall grow to viable embrios?

also, what would cause so few to fertilize

We had 15 eggs retrieved, 13 mature, and 11 fertliized (5/5 natural fertilization and 6/8 with ICSI). Of those 11, we transferred 2 on Day 5, and 5 were frozen on Day 6.

I don't know why only 6 would fertilize...I'm sure someone else will jump in with some educated ideas.

We had 9 eggs retrieved - 7 were mature - 6 fertilized (with ICSI) - and 4 made it to blastocyst stage

I can understand why you are feeling disappointed. I am so new to this that I can't really offer advice other than to say what the other girls have said makes perfect sense. It really only takes one. Try to stay positive.

well I talked to the dr today, he was great to call me personally instead of having a nurse talk to me. But he said they were all shocked at how few fertilized but he is confident we will have several strong ones by wednesday.

My feelings were that this could explain why its taking so long, and overjoyed we paid for icsi and had so many otherwise who knows, we may not hae 6. I am honestly surprised how positive I am, I am sort or a pesamistic. I don't want to believe it till its proven true kind of person. but I am really trying to be positive, and its actually working

6 fertilized is really good! I know it's disappointing to have a low % fertilize, but try not to think about that so much and just concentrate on those 6 that did take. I hope that all 6 continue to thrive for you.

I will caution you that if you are going to blast stage (day 5), then be prepared that not all 6 will make - on average you can expect to a lose a couple of those 6. But that's okay, you'll still have enough embies for your transfer and you may end up with a couple to freeze, which is even more fantastic. My view on this is the "strongest survive" so by the time you get to day 5 you have the very best embies with the best chance for success.

Good luck and keep up the positive thinking!

If I recall, we had 13 retrieved, 11 were mature, 8 fertilized and 4 made it to blast ......we transferred 2 and froze 2. We attempted FET 3 times, but my lining is never thick enough so it had to be cancelled every time.

Wishing you lots of luck and
