I posted this on the TTC board before I realized this board was here. I hope its ok to post in both places.

Can anyone who has been through an IUI tell me about their experience? Was it painful for you?

I will probably have an IUI because I am going to be a surrogate for a couple from Italy. I just have to pass my psych eval first, thats why I said probably. If I pass I will be having the IUI and want to prepare.

Thanks!!

I had a double IUI (two IUIs on two consecutive days) and I wouldn't call it painful. It was uncomfortable, but also very quick. I got ovarian hyperstimulation from the injectable medications I needed to ovulate, and that was very unpleasant, but absolutely worth it, because I got pregnant

Do you pay double the amount for a double IUI? I would think so but just curious if its actually double or if they give u a deal for doing 2 back to back. Thanks

My IUIs (I had 6 with 2 different docs) weren't painful at all. The process is like a pap smear in that they insert the speculum, which is uncomfortable. I hardly ever felt the catheter going in, and only had slight cramping a couple of times afterwards.

My RE did ultrasound guided IUIs, which required a full bladder. Having the nurse pushing on my stomach while the RE did the IUI was REALLY uncomfortable, but the IUI itself was a breeze

I did pay for each IUI. My insurance covered the whole IUI cycle, but if they hadn't we could have still afforded it, each IUI was about $300. The expensive part of the cycle was the medication - the injects ran about $1500, we had to pay for $150 of that.

I never had even the slightest bit of physical discomfort. I had "mental discomfort" for obvious reasons.

ETA: that's kind of a lie. I did have some cramping that evening but I put it down to ovulation since I have that cramping on ovulation day whether there is an IUI or not.

My IUI was a piece of cake. The worst is when they inserted the speculum because they didn't use any lubricant - but even that wasn't bad. I had no discomfort at all when they inserted the catheter.

Good luck.
