Does your RE do these? My first cycle with the RE, they did a post coital and the sperm didn't look too good, so the timing wasn't quite right. They did it again a few days later and the sperm looked good, so I guess it's helpful to determine O time.
I'm starting my second cycle with my RE and have an appt on Friday (CD 12). They want to do another post coital. There are 2 nurses there that do it and one of them seriously HURT me when she did it. I was bleeding the rest of the day! The other nurse was a million times better, but it still wasn't too comfortable. I wish my RE did it himself. He is amazing! No pain!
We had a post-coital test with our RE, and failed miserably. I don't think it is to determine O time...sometimes the sperm don't swim thru the cervical mucus because there is a problem with the sperm. Bad PTC results can give you ideas of what might be wrong (hostile CM, sperm abnormalities, etc.) but some RE's don't believe they are worth doing.

I've had one, and it was a bit painful... mostly because she had to wiggle around the spec to get to my cervix. Ow! We got a bad score for the living/motile sperm, but I had a good score for the quality of CM I had-- which surprised me! Apparently they figured out that DH and I probably don't match pH, which is why they suggested IUI. Who knows. I think they're worth doing, but probably not as accurate as we'd like them to be.
