Hi ladies! Im new to this board but not to JM, I post over at ttcal. I saw the fertility specialist today and when he mentioned meds, he said he used clomid or femara. So since Id never heard of femara, I did a quick google search and got the scare of my life!! So Im off of google for now, and Im going to where people actually have experience, and thats where you all come in! Can you help? Which would you prefer? Pros or cons that you consider? Anything you know really, will be so helpful!

I have been on both clomid and femara. I used 50mg of clomid days 3-7 and my worst s/e was the hot flashes and the thin lining that it caused. I only tried femara for one cycle and it was a bust because I didn't respond to it. I was on 5mg and they wanted to up my dose but I wanted to move on to injects instead. I didn't have ANY s/e on femara and my lining looked much better, but I didn't have any follie growth. I know a lot of ladies that have had wonderful experiences with both drugs. I will say, that no matter what you choose to go on, please make sure that you are being monitored throughout your cycle. It's really important that you keep an eye on how you are responding to the drugs, follie development, lining, ect.
Good luck with things!!!
Yet another wonderful siggy by HeatherW.... thank you so much!!!
Hi and welcome! I also took both clomid and femara. I produced more follicles on clomid but my lining was too thin. I responded a lot better to femara; my lining was thicker, I had 1-2 nice sized follicles when I used femara, everything "looked great" however I didnt get pregnant. But that is not to say femara doesn’t work, it did improve my chances but for some reason it wasn’t meant to happen for me in that way I guess.
I saw some pretty scary things on google about birth defects being linked to use of femara. I asked my RE about this before I would consider taking it and she told me that those defects come from when you are taking femara after ovulation, for example the drug is actually used to treat breast cancer and so these women who accidently get pregnant while being treated are at risk for the birth defects since they are continuously taking the drug. For fertility you take it to stimulate your ovaries to develop follicles and then you stop taking the drug so it is out of you system and does not harm the fetus. Many drugs used for fertility and other "off label uses" of drugs were because while the drug was being used to treat what it was designed for a side effect was noted that might be a benefit for a different patient not relating at all to what the drug was originally designed for. Does that make sense? So what I’m guessing is the birth defects lead to studies which showed these women became more fertile while on this med and so it caught the interests of REs to be used differently in order to meet our goals in getting pregnant. I hope I didn’t totally lose you in my rambling and I answered your question. Good luck with whatever you chose and I hope you get your BFP!!!
TTC since Nov. 2007. All testing=completely normal....but we still have empty arms! clomid-thin lining and BFN; femara-BFN, 3 IUIs= BFN, IVF (Nov 2010)= BFN. IVF 2 (FET)= BFP!! beta 1: 29.2 beta 2: 120!!!
I am on my 1st cycle with clomid and my only side affect was hot flushes for a few days. I was monitored with scan on CD12 and CD15 and my lining was fine so fingers crossed.
Good luck with your choice and pop back and let us know how you are getting on.
I know you from TTCAL! I haven't taken femara but know several who have who swear by it. Plus I've talked to several TTCMA grads who didn't respond well to Clomid who responded beautifully to Femera. Anyway, I have taken Clomid & it wasn't bad at all for me & even wanted to try Femera b/c of all the GREAT things I've heard but my RE wouldn't have any of that.
I've also taken both femara and clomid. I did 3 cycles of 100mg of clomid. I had horrible hot flashes and thin lining also.....same complaint as most everyone else. I did one cycle of femara and had no side effects. On both meds, I produced 1-2 follies.
