My eyes are swollen, face is beat red and I have been crying for going on 2 hours.

I had my 2nd u/s and bloodwork today. No word on bloodwork yet but RE said based on my u/s he says I have stage 3 Endometriosis. WTH???? I had an u/s in Oct. and 30+ u/s in late 2009 with my IUI's and IVF back then. I have NO pain, NO heavy bleeding NO nothing. Is this an accurate diagnoses?????

He said as of today we can continue my IVF cycle. Having Endo should not effect the success rate.(Is that true????) If I don't get prego this cycle then he wants me to have surgery and then do a FET if I have any frozen embryos.

Has this happened to anyone before?
Is this going to effect my IVF cycle?

I'm so stressed. 5 1/2 years into TTC and we have hit another road block. Are we not meant to have more kids?????? I'm so confused

I know im not a member of this board but I have stage 2 endometriosis. There is no way endo can be diagnosed by ultrasound. No way. The only way to diagnose endo is by laproscopic surgery. Now he may have seen an ovary pulled out of the way and suspected endo or something. But no way can he be so certain!
And doctors usually only suspect and perform laparoscopies when their patient has, like you said, painful and heavy periods. He's right in that it wouldn't impact your ivf at all. I would think if you had stage 3 you'd be in some major pain af time. I have extremely painful periods.
Ask him why he thinks this and what his reasoning is. And if you do have it, well, after having been told I would have a hard time having children, I have gotten pregnant four times with no assistance other then laparoscopies. So the surgery is successful if that is your problem.

I have stage 4 endo, and it is true that they ABSOLUTELY can't diagnose this from an u/s. I don't understand your doctor's thinking, let alone be able to tell the stage of it through an u/s!? Sounds a bit absurd.

I'm really sorry, Brynn. I really hope things work out and that you don't have to worry about surgery or anything-- I'm just sort of shocked and am not sure what to say because I don't know why your doctor would say that.

I don't know a lot about the condition but if the ladies say it can't be diagnosed through u/s, I'd definitely be questioning how this doctor came up with the conclusion. I will tell you that a friend of mine had severe endo and had the surgery and had 3 babies in a matter of 4 years, so if you do have it, surgery can be very successful, I really hope you don't have it though, I know my friend had massively severe periods to where she couldn't get out of bed for the pain and had prescription pain meds for it.

WOW you ladies have provided me with some great info. I need to do some research on this and question him. I'm just so confused. I truly have NO pain or NO abnormal bleeding. I'm heavy on days 2 and 3. Usually need a super tampon and a pad and I need to change it every 1 to 2 hours. That is worst case. If I have cramps they are normal. Nothing 2 Tylenol can't take care of. I just don't understand.

I guess I'm going to be doing a lot of research to figure out what is going on.

ok so I just read on Yahoo Health that it can be diagnosed through trans-vaginal u/s. and another website says a trans-vaginal u/s can suggest the presence of Endo but still cannot definitively diagnose endometriosis.

So what do you ladies think I should say to him? Should I just let it go until I know for sure through the laparoscopy if I don't get prego? Is there anything at this time I can do?

First of all, I'm so sorry you've been worrying and crying about this! I have/had stage 2 endo and my periods were moderately heavy with pretty bad cramps that eased with 3 Ibuprofin. I had a lap surgery and my RE was able to remove most of the endo. The lap wasn't bad at all, so if that's what you need, try not to fret too much.

I don't think endo would interfere with your upcoming IVF, so the most important thing *right now* is to relax and think positive thoughts. I don't know if there's a proven correlation between stress and failed IVF, but my first IVF didn't work. During that time, I was extremely stressed out, DH and I were fussing constantly over his mother, his mother and I actually had words and I spent several days of a cruise in bed in our cabin because I was so angry at....you guessed it, his mother.

My second IVF was completely different and I was totally relaxed, no stress. Success! My point is, you have to try your very best not to worry too much right now. If you do indeed need a lap, it's not bad at all!

Good luck honey! I know how emotionally draining all this can be. I hope you get your BFP this time and you won't have to worry about endo ever again!

I agree with the other ladies. I was told by my RE that they cannot diagnose endometriosis with an u/s. I also had the lap and they found that I had stage 2. They were able to remove most of it.

Not sure if it will interfere with your IVF or not. If it was me, I would have the lap procedure before the IVF. You invest a lot of money, time, and emotions with an IVF. I would want to make sure that I am at my best when going through the journey.

Good luck with your decision.

I wouldn't really trust much you read on Yahoo Health. Check MD Consult or another of the peer reviewed medical journal sources for real info. U/s might suggest endo but you have to visually see it to diagnose it, especially the stage, and nothing on U/s is going to indicate that, especially not that level

i wanted to add in my thoughts here. lissy was told, only after being confirmed after diagnostic surgery, that she had stage 4 endo and would require a hysterectomy soon. her OB said if she wanted to have kids to do so immediately because, at stage 4, there is a risk of it becoming cancerous later. she does have lots of pain and heavy bleeding. she went with IVF becuase her dr told her that with endo, there is a chemical fluid that is in the area between the ovary and the tube. it kills off the egg before it even has a chance to fertilize. she did IVF once and got her boys with no problems. i would for sure want more tests run before just agreeing that you have endo. maybe ask a specialist?

I just wanted to ditto what they other ladies said. Endo cannot be diagnosed through anything other than a lap. Endo's one of those funny things. You can have stage 4 and have no pain or have stage 1 and have excruciating pain. With IVF since your pretty much bypassing everything I wouldn't think there would be a problem. Infertility from endo is usually because it's either on the ovaries preventing them from working properly or on the tubes preventing them from working properly. As far as the surgery goes, recovery is pretty easy. I just had my 4th lap two weeks ago.

Yeah, I would wait until a Lap before you feel labeled with Endo. *hugs* It's not something they can verify on Ultrasound!

Thanks everyone. I'm starting to feel better. I need to accept that what happens is out of my control. I'm taking things one day at a time. As for not my IVF is still going. I'm 4 days into stimming and my e2 is at 540 and fish is at 20. The nurse said this number are in normal range.

Thanks again ladies

One thing to point out is that if you do have endo, I'd suggest possibly getting immune testing. Immune problems, well beyond thyroid problems, can cause miscarriage issues. I have endo and this is my next step of testing

I went through 3 monitored IUIs and endo was never discovered on u/s. After the failed IUIs, my RE suggested we do a Lap to rule out endo because I was still classified as "unexplained". When I had the lap, it was discovered I had stage 3 endo. I had NO symptoms of endo except for infertility.....and infertility IS a symptom. After the lap, my RE suggested we TTC on our own for awhile because she had removed all (or most) of the endo. We tried for 4 months with no luck. And then, my RE suggested IVF because IVF would completely bypass the endo problems. That's what we did and we got pregnant on the first IVF cycle.

Most RE's are fairly closed to immune testing honestly so he'll probably dismiss it. But honestly do some searching on the medical journals and you'll find plenty of info that your RE will dismiss quickly

I'm sorry you were crying. I don't have a lot of advice because I didn't have this but my cousin does and just had a hysterectomy because of it. I remember the only way she got diagnosed was through a lap because she had the symptoms. Also before she had the surgery she had 2 kids without any type of assisstance. I wish you a bunch of luck on your ivf and I hope you have success with it!
