Has anyone heard of coenzyme Q10 or DHEA for fertility?

I was checking yesterday to see if there were any IVF clinical trials accepting patients in Canada. There are four (of which I qualify for none ), but one of the trials was to see if giving IVF patients coenzyme Q10 increased their chances of conceiving and of live birth. They tried to run the same trial last year, and had to cancel it because of a lack of participants, so it made me wonder if there were huge risks or something with that supplement. IVF is generally not covered even partially by any health plans in Canada (except in Quebec where their provincial insurance covers it), so when you're looking at paying $12 000 for something, it baffles me why people wouldn't want to participate in the trial if they could unless there were huge risks.

When I googled it, it seems that on other message boards, women are taking both the Q10 and something called DHEA. It seems to primarily help women over 35 with either a lower amount of eggs or lower egg quality. Anyway, just wondering if anyone had heard of it or has any thoughts.

This is a link to the study that was cancelled: How Dose Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation During Infertility Treatment Effects Pregnancy Outcome - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov

This is the study currently accepting participants: The Effect of Co Enzyme Q10 Together With Fertility Drugs on Pregnancy Outcome of in Vitro Fertilization - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov

I don't qualify because I won't be 35 until November, but other than age, they seem to be open to accepting a wide variety of women.

I was taking DHEA. (I'm 40)
I spoke to my RE about it, he told me a couple of years ago it was all the buzz in fertility, stumbled upon by accident. It can increase the amount of pre-follicle cells in your ovaries.
What they have found so far is that it only works in a small percentage of women. He didn't say anything about it being a determinant, just that most likely it is not of any help. Baiscally he told me that if it worked, it had already done it's job, but it is a small percentage of women it works in.

Sounds like an interesting study though.

I'm a High FSH woman, and this is the primary group that DHEA has been used for, but you really really have to ensure that you get this hormone tested before you begin taking the pills, because it's a male androgen, and taking high amounts of this in a body already stabilized with DHEA can cause damage to follicles and cause MORE harm. Since DHEA and FSH are both sex hormones regulated by the pituitary, it stands to reason that increasing one will decrease the other. Just as some women take estrogen to decrease FSH, they do this also with DHEA.

CoQ10 however is relatively harmless and has shown nothing but good side effects. Go ahead with that one, but get your DHEA levels tested before you start taking the 75 mg DHEA or you could go wrong.

Thanks for the info! Everything I'm reading agrees with you that the Q10 is basically harmless so I really don't understand why the study didn't have enough participants. I'm sure they will be done taking participants by the time I turn 35, but I will keep an eye on it just in case.

I have high FSH, am 41 (will be 42 next week) and swear by DHEA! I was told by my RE that the only way for me to get pregnant was through IVF and donor eggs. I stumbled across the DHEA study and since taking it got pregnant! I guess I was in that small percentage that it helped.

I didn't take coQ10 my first IVF cycle and it failed. My RE actually told me and my DH to begin right away .... and we had success on our second IVF cycle... we also took Vitamin D and daily vitamin pill. I wouldn't be afraid of coQ10 at all... it is safe!! Good Luck!

My DH and I both took 600 mg a day - 200mg per meal. It is the first thing my RE told me to get on right away after our first failure.

Thank you - can I ask if you did ICSI? I am asking because of this:

Quote:
Coenzyme Q10
Important for energy production. Levels of CoQ10 are lower in a woman who has experienced a recent miscarriage. ICSI fertilization rates may rise when taking this supplement. It also improves blood flow. Dosage: talk to your healthcare professional.
