Hi, I have never posted here before, but, I saw my doctor on wednesday, (following being in the ER with pain, I had a cyst the burst.) But anyhow, he has ordered a blood test to check my progesterone on CD 23. My last several cycles have been long, last 2 really long (68 and 69 days) So if I have not ovulated yet, he is going to get me on clomid or femera (sp?). I am not sure which is better, any opinions??

Also, watch it be just my luck to ovulate on time this month, lol, the only way that would be good is if I got PG this month too!!

Our TTC journey: I went off the pill April 10, 2010. I have had irregular cycles ever since. We have tried everything from soy isoflavones, fertili tea, fertil aid for both, sperm count and motility boost for DH, femera, relaxing, giving up...no luck. SA 06/2011-5mil, 05/2012-no live sperm, 07/2012-17mil!! HSG 7/25/12, all clear. Next cycle, Femara 3-7, scan cd 11, 5 follies 17, 12, 12, 11, 10, trigger cd 12, IUI (8/30/12) cd14: BFN, AF showed 9/13/12 -On to cycle 2 with medication and IUI. 9/28 quit groqing, cycle cancelled. 2/6/13 follistim cd 3-12, follies 19, 18, 17, 12, count 1.7 mil, BFN. Skipping this cycle.

I can't speak on Femara, I've never taken it.

My OB put me on clomid for 7 cycles. I was ovulating on my own, but not until CD 24 some months. The clomid moved my ovulation up to CD 16. There are many possible side effects - the ones that I experienced were hot flashes and pain during ovulation. After those 7 cycles, I requested a referral to the fertility clinic. My doctor at the fertility clinic was very concerned that I had been on clomid so long because it can thin your uterine lining. Even if you get pregnant, if your lining is too thin, you won't be able to carry the baby. So, if you decide to go with clomid, be careful not to be on it too long. If you do get concerned about thin lining issues, there are natural supplements that you can take to help rebuild the lining.

The only other thing that I would suggest researching is the use of soy isoflavones. You take it for the same days as you would clomid (cd 3-7 or 5-9, whatever your doctor said) and you take double the dosage. So, if you were taking 50mg of clomid, you would take 100 mg of soy isoflavones. I only tried the soy last month, but it moved my ovulation up the same way clomid did but without the hot flashes or thinning the lining.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Just lurking here, but does the soy think out your lining like clomid does? I am ttc #2 and had to take clomid and metformin to get pg the first time since I don't ovulate on my own. I was just curious about soy since I've heard of people taking it in place of clomid. Thanks!

I second most of what Jacquie said...Clomid moved up my ovulation, but thinned my lining to the point that a pregnancy would have been impossible if not for big Estrogen injections to make it thicker right before ovulation. The mood swings and hot flashes were not fun, either. I have not taken Femara, but most women have far fewer side effects while taking it, and the effectiveness (as far as aiding ovulation) is supposed to be about the same.

I recommend femera. I've taken both. With Clomid I had hot flashes and a very thin lining after taking it for several cycles. With Femera, I had no side effects.

Marina'sMommy - Everything I've read says that NO, the soy doesn't thin your lining. Last month was my first month on soy, this month I'm on it again and I will have my lining checked later this cycle so I'll be able to know for myself. That said, I'm also taking red raspberry leaf, which thickens the lining, so my experience won't be a true reflection of simply taking soy alone, kwim?

I took soy isoflavones the last 2 cycles and they were my longest cycles ever!! I was having 36-51 day cycles, and the last 2 were 68 and 69 days, so I feel like the soy did not help me! I took it CD 3-7.

I hated Clomid...the side effects sucked. With Femara, it worked better and there were no side effects.

That sucks about the soy Nikki, sorry your cycles were so long! I hope one of the other meds works much better for you!
