So I asked my RE today what his thoughts were on DHEA....his answer was ...'This is an unresolved issue at the moment. I’ll keep my eye on the literature regarding this however.'

So I wonder what is everyones experience with DHEA? Do you stop taking it once you ovulate? It doesnt seem like it is some you would really need past tha t point...at least not during the 2ww....

I'm on 75mg a day (25mg in morning and 50 mg evening). We put our patients on it until egg retrieval, and I plan on taking it through trigger.

Hi Sandy -

I called a few of the other girls in here and hopefully they can share their success stories as well with you.

As a disclaimer I will say "I am not a doctor, I can not give you medical advice or tell you that this will work. I can't even say this would not harm you". I can only share my own story.

I am 42 and had high FSH (16+). We TTC with 4 losses and the RE told me I would not be able to have another baby without donor eggs. Out of desperation I scoured the internet and I think I would have tried anything at that point.

Summary: I took DHEA from walmart 75mg 1 time a day in the am. We had failed IUI and clomid cycles, the doc said IVF without donor eggs would be a waste of time, we ran out of money and I ended up getting pregnant on my own!

I did have 1 loss 4 months after starting the dhea... but 2 months later got pregnant with Scarlett. I took it through my whole cycle... kept taking it until I got my bfp then stopped.

If you decide to take it I wish you the best of luck!!! ((hugs)) I understand the heartache you are going through.

and ps... you take it through your whole cycle as it is believed it "calls up" the good eggs. As your eggs that will be released are determined by your body 3 months in advance it is good to take it the full time.

And I had no side effects from taking it. I think it was 6 or 7 months total I took it.

My RE was stunned!

Wow - that is so cool! I would love to prove my RE wrong! I've been afraid to take the DHEA, but your post sure makes me want to now.

Did RE know you were taking it? If so, was he against it?

Thank you so much!!!! This is great news!!!!

I actually started DHEA on Friday, the only bad thing is I will only be on it for about 4 weeks when I will be starting my next medicated cycle, now I am wishing I had started it sooner rather than just thinking about it.

My RE did not know I was taking it as I had stopped going there. After the sad news of my high FSH levels my best friend offered her eggs to me and we all sat down and talked about it and really considered going that route. Both of our husbands as well as her mom and sister were all for it. Then my husband lost his job, we ran out of money and the whole thing was put on hold. I had not been to the RE in over 5 months when I called them after I got my BFP and asked if they would see me for early ultrasounds... they were all so happy for us!

..... my neighbor who just turned 43 just told me she is pregnant!!! They have an almost 2 year old girl and were trying hard for another baby without success. I told her about DHEA (gave her my leftover bottle) about 4 months ago...

I don't want any false hope out there - it is not a miracle pill. I have heard of girls taking it and not getting pregnant. But I personally know of 4 girls now that have had infertility/losses that have gone on to have babies with dhea.

Hello! My name is Stacey and I am 42. I wanted to share my story with you. Dh and I have been trying for 3 years. We were told we wouldn't be able to get pregrant on our own. We did a iui in June of 2010. We got pregrant but sadly this would be our first loss. We got pregrant on our own two more times after that. Sadly we lost both of them. We were about to give up when Missy told me about Dhea. I took Dhea (Walmart 75mg) a day. I took it until I got a bfp. We are currently expecting our little boy in May. I believe in Dhea. I hope this helps you.

I know that it is recommended to take DHEA for at least 3 months , Stacey how long did you take it before your BFP?

My RE told me to take DHEA too since my FSH levels are high - 25mg three times a day. I read about it and did not like what I read one bit - so I put off taking it for a while. I have now been taking it for about a month and am VERY happy to say that I am having none of the scary side effects that I read about! I am going to take it every day until I get my BFP - that is what the RE told me!

We are set to start letrozole, follistim and ovidrel next cycle, but I am debating if we should wait until the following cycle. Time is not on my side so I think that I should go ahead and try the meds next cycle but then I think I should give the DHEA more that just a month to get into my system....
Odds are I will get pregnant (based on my history) but I will kick myself if I have yet another miscarriage if I dont give the DHEA a chance.....

Good thing I have 3 weeks to decide.

I am praying for you girls! I know what you are going through... It is hard enough to deal with infertility let alone losses on top of it. It was a 2 1/2 year journey for us and I know that is a short time compared to some of you. I slipped into depression stages at points and we almost gave up. (((millions of hugs))) I hope you get pregnant with your babies soon.

Well I have been taking DHEA for nearly 3 weeks with no side effects and we have decided to push back our next medicated cycle one month (end of April). For 3 reasons, 1, to let the DHEA have a chance 2, to let my Levothyroxine dosage adjustment a month to get into my system. My TSH level was a lil higher than it had been over the past couple years...it was 2.76 two weeks ago and the 'ideal' level for conception is less than 2.5 or less than 2 depending on where you read it and 3, so I dont have to have the 'what if's about letting the DHEA have a chance.

Sounds like a plan!! I'm happy for you!
I was only taking DHEA for about 4 weeks prior to getting my BFP this time - so of course I am worried that I didn't really let it get into my system enough. But maybe I will be lucky and this egg will be the good healthy one!!

Thanks. I was taking OTC DHEA. I have had three miscarriages in the past so feeling very cautious about this one. No problem getting pregnant, only staying pregnant!
