Well we had our first very early u/s today at 5 weeks and 5 days and they seen 2 sacs! Of course the RE wanted to keep me grounded and said until we see heartbeats to not consider us having twins yet but I already consider it twins ....very odd, I thought the RE sees you for the first couple visits but they have already released me to the ob and want me to go next week for another u/s to see the hb's, my ob was a bit shocked and said they don't normally see people until 8 weeks at the earliest for hb check but they are bending the rules and seeing me at 7 weeks 2 days, not next week but early the following week on the 17th. I asked her when they normally see the hb and she said around 8 weeks, that seems late to me, I thought they see them between 6-7 weeks, or was that ob just being overly cautious?

They want me to get in as early as possible because once the hb's are seen, I can stop the endometrin.

Awww yay for two sacs! Normally you can see heartbeats between 6-7 weeks. I know the clinic I used with Darcy would have released me after my 6 week ultrasound, but I wanted 1 more ultrasound beforehand. I can't wait to hear how the next one goes!

first off - YAY congrats on twins!!!! It is a little odd your RE is releasing you so early (mine will release me after a 7wk u/s and presumably once hb is seen) but your OB is exactly like mine - unless there's an issue (bleeding, etc) they don't do any u/s until 8wks.

That said, you can definitely see hbs earlier than 8 weeks...I saw one with my 3rd pregnancy at 6wks but I think a lot of doctors wait until 8wks to not panic us and in case the dates are off a bit. My guess is at 7wks you'll definitely see hbs!

I was so focused on my babies that I guess I forgot that the RE said he will be on vacation all next week, dh reminded me that he said that, therefore the reason he couldn't do the next u/s to check for the hb's, its a very small practice and he is the only one that can do them, so that makes sense, but my ob was not wanting to do one so early but I am glad they made an exception, they said they don't usually see IVF patients coming from an RE until 10 weeks but see regular patients as early as 8...I reaaaaallly want to stop this endometrin so hopefully all will go well and we'll see two flickering heartbeats in a week and a half!

lurking here, as always. when elissa, my DIL, did IVF her RE kept her till 12 weeks. she went in like every week for an update. she did end up with twins, which we learned at the first u/s at about two weeks after transfer. wishing you so much luck with your pregnancy.

OH, Joanna!!! I'm so thrilled for you!!! I KNEW there were 2 little beans in there

Is the endometrin like the vaginal progesterone inserts? I had to use those until 10 weeks, even though baby was very healthy and all looked good. They said to go until then to assure the placenta took over progesterone production and there was no risk. I'm not sure how endometrin works, though. I just want to make sure that you don't stop it too early Maybe get your P4 levels checked before and after you stop to assure your body continues to make enough P4?

Anyway, I'm so excited! I can't wait until you start talking names

They are vaginal progesterone suppositories but my doctor said I can stop them completely as soon as the heartbeat is picked up, I've read some stop them immediately after pregnancy is confirmed and some continue until 10 weeks, every docs recommendation is different, a girl that did IVF on the same day as me is already off hers and went off at 5 weeks. I was on them 3 times a day, then 2, then once the two sacs were seen they said I can do 1 a day until the heartbeat is detected then stop. Endometrin cannot be detected in your blood, it goes directly to your uterus but not detectable through blood, but I do trust my RE, he's been doing this since 1974 . I seem to read ladies that have had known progesterone issues stay on them longer than ones that don't, I've never had that and have always had completely regular cycles.

I am very excited but quite anxious to hopefully see both heartbeats at my next u/s, I cannot completely believe I'll have two healthy babies until I see those hearts beating, it just all seems so surreal, we've been trying so long and now may have TWO blessings, just unreal!

That is sooo exciting!! I know twins are a handful but with how long we have been trying to get pregnant, I would be ecstatic to have two.. all DH and I want (unless our finances improve significantly) is two.. so I would be happy to close up shop after 2. I am happy for you!
