wow. just wow. So VERY long story short...my high school best friend has never wanted kids. Even in HS she knew she wanted to be child-free as she HATES kids. kids, babies, whatever she hates them and has never wanted any...

I've always joked around that if she could surgically sterilize herself, she would.

Well. She is. She posted it on facebook and that she is giving herself an "anti-baby shower" (no joke, she is the type that would do that).

She is paying (well, actually her insurance covers it, because OF COURSE insurance will cover that but not to GET pregnant) to have a surgery-free permanent birth control procedure done called Essure. She is 33 years old (6 months younger than me). I'm not really all that shocked and honestly I respect this more than people who don't want kids yet refuse to go on birth control and end up having kids they don't want...

But seriously - she is paying to have herself surgically sterilized while I have to pay to have a chance at conceiving.

I need to add...Don't get me wrong - I actually respect her for this due to the fact that she won't bring an unwanted child into this world and she knows what she wants/doesn't want...it's just so freakin' - I don't even know how to describe it, really...I mean I'm NOT shocked - I knew she'd eventually do something like this...but you know? It's just like - REALLY? I'M the one who WANTS kids and I have to pay thousands of dollars to TRY and get pregnant - she's the one who does NOT and her insurance pays for her to NOT get pregnant!

Ouch! Whilst she may be doing the responsible thing, I can totally get how this still frustrates you!

I'd feel the same.

I really wish insurance covered family planning rather than BC, so planning to have kids would be paid for just like planning not to have kids.

It is heartbreaking that insurance doesn't cover any of this. I even live in Ohio where insurance companies can and will cover it but ONLY if the employer makes it part of their plan. Well of course NONE of the do. NONE.

It is hard to see someone give up so easily what we want.
