So when I had my mock transfer we had an SA done as well. SA came back with 4000 WBC and should be less then 1000. RE was putting on us antibiotics any ways because that is protocol for IVF. They did send his SA away for a culture that took two weeks and it came back negative. So DH and I finish all the antibiotics. We’ve been done know for a over a week. DH tells me on Friday that it burns now when he pees. WHAT? Poor guy – classic symptoms of UTI as I have had many.
So I call RE today and he won’t prescribe him anymore antibiotics. Says he has to go to Family Doc or Urologist. Seriously? We are paying him $ 20,000.00 and he can’t just call in a prescription for DH?
DH is annoyed to say the least. So he is goes to family doc today and he wants to test him for everything under the sun. Well we already had all of that in the last 4 weeks at RE getting ready for IVF. He has been tested for things I haven’t even heard of! DH declines and says no I have 2000.00 in lab fees because I was just tested for everything for IVF. Family doc refuses to treat him.
I kindly call the office and go off on them. Well not kindly but definitely went off on them. I probably shouldn’t have but they get the brunt of me being mad that RE won’t prescribe anything and that DH is cranky and not feeling well and if this messes with IVF I am going to freak out.
So I send DH to med center down the road. He goes in POAS (haha) and yup UTI. Hubby is home resting now with one dose of Macrobid in him and hopefully feels better by tomorrow.
Isn’t crazy that his SA indicated that weeks ago before he had any symptoms at all. Weird that the antibiotics RE made us both take didn’t take care of it. It must have been a different strain of bacteria that the antibiotics couldn’t help.

Doesn't surprise me that it showed up in the SA first. Does surprise me that your RE wouldn't prescribe anything!
Each antibiotic covers certain bacteria. Cipro and macrobid are great for the renal system/urinary tract. Flagyl and diflocan are great for reproductive areas especially vaginal issues (think yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis). Penicillin is great for broad spectrum infections mostly respiratory. Doxycycline is another broad spectrum antibiotic but not great for certain specific infections. And the list goes on.

Sorry, I'm a med nerd lol!

If your DH doesn't like cranberry juice (which I really don't that stuff is nasty) sweetened dried cranberries and natural lemonade are other ways to help flush the system. Avoid sodas, too much caffeine and keep up fluids!

Hope he gets better soon!

Doxycycline was what RE put us both on for IVF. Just didnt' do the job I suppose.

What do you think the RE reason is he wouldn't call him in something? Cause DH is a man and he is only used to working with women?

Aww, you guys have enough going on than to worry about finding someone to prescribe your DH some meds. I would have been pissed too that the RE couldn't just call something in. Im glad he finally has some meds and hopefully he starts to feel better soon!

Awe poor guy! I think UTI make EVERYONE crabby! What a bunch of jerks at your Family doc. I don't understand. If he said " I think I have a UTI" and declines the othe tests they should still address the FIRST issue. I get the symptoms for a UTI and stds are similar but wouldnt a simple lab test showed that he had a UTI? How annoying.

Exactly a simple test would have told them it was a UTI. He even explained he has been tested for everything else just weeks ago.

I just talked to DH and now he thinks he has a yeast infection instead of a UTI. I think the stress of all these doctors are making him nuts.
Still annoyed my RE wouldn't just hook him up with something.

Yeah unfortunately the bacteria that causes UTIs isn't affected by doxy as a general rule and yeah I'd be willing to bet he doesn't deal with men enough.

Would the UTI test turn + with yeast?
I hope it's not yeast because an antibiotic will just make it worse.
Poor guy!!!!
Did you get him on a probiotic by any chance?

You guys are not going to believe this... DH is still not feeling well from what we thought was a UTI. He thinks it's a prostrate infection now. Really? We are about to start Lupron in 7 days and now this? RE told him to get to urologist on Monday if he can. Prostrate infection can cause problems with sperm. Plus he just doesn't feel good down there at all. He has never had any problems ever down there and now that we are getting ready to start IVF he is? I am guessing they are going to hold us off another month or two now. What if we lose our donor now becuase of this? I guess the good thing is that neither her or I have started meds yet other than bcp. DH is depressed, now I am depressed mostly cause he doesn't feel good. I kept asking him if he was feeling better after Cipro antibiotics and he was saying yes but still didn't have a s$xual drive. I figured he was just telling me that so I didn't worry... then this morning he told me he wasn't feeling better at all and wanted to go to med center or hospital. I called RE and he said urologist on Monday so that he is diagnosed correctly.

Sorry for the rant..

Oh no! Im sorry he isn't feeling better. The timing stinks. I hope the urologist can figure something out for your DH, its sad he has been in pain/not feeling good this whole time! That was sweet of him to try to hide it though - like he doesn't want to worry you after all the other things you guys are going through right now.

Oh, Gretchen, I’m so sorry you and your DH are going through all this!

Just wondering, if you unfortunately have to delay for your DH’s medical concerns. ..to keep from losing the donor, would it be possible to have the donor go through stimming and then freezing all the eggs, then when everything is in order, thawing, fertilizing, transfer and freezing the rest of the embryos? Not sure if that’s even an option for you all or something you’d want to do. I just thought of it because one of my closest friends is just about to turn 36 and is single with no potential long term relationship in the near further, and she seeing my infertility struggles, has her thinking of her future, so she is doing IVF during the summer to freeze some eggs for the future.

Hopefully, all the medical issues are cleared up fast and you won’t have to delay or worry about a thing, but wanted to see if you thought about that so you don’t potentially lose the donor.
