Im pretty much a mess today, after being told yesterday that it was not likely that this cycle was going to work, due to 1.7 mil sperm count. And i honestly dont know if that was pre or post wash

He told us that we have 4 options. #1 and best option is IVF with ICSI. #2 is use donor sperm #3 persue adoption #4 decide to live our life as the family we are. So, none of these options are good

#1 There is no way we can afford IVF at this point. We can't even get a loan right now, we just bought and remodeled our house. So, it will probably be atleast a year until we pay off some of our debt and can get a loan.

#2 We are not ok with donor sperm. It may be a last resort, but, at this point, it is not an option.

#3 Adoption, again, there is no way we can finance that route at this point.

And #4 is just not an option

I asked if there was anything we could do to improve his counts, he said he could refer us to a urologist. I also just started him on fertilaid, count boost, motility boost, and a B-complex w/vitimin C.

My plan is to keep him on the meds, and heallthy lifestyle changes. Skip a cycle, and get another SA. His results before have varied up to 17 mil. If the next SA shows improvement, i want to continue IUI. I responded well and the meds, BW and U/S are covered. All we have to pay is the cost of the IUI and copays and stuff. So, it costs about $500 a cycle. So, i really don't want to give up and go to IVF which will cost $12,000+

Does anybody have any opinions, advice, success, bad news, anything, I am grasping here, and falling off the edge. We have been tring for 3 years, and everytime I think we get an answer, it doesnt work. Please, anything.

*hugs* remember, it takes 90 days to really see results from any changes in sperm count, so with the meds and such it can work. We chose to go with donor sperm but it was a very hard choice and took forever..and now we haven't needed it but we did use it and would again. If you want to talk about that, I'm more than willing as well.

Hi Nikki,

SO sorry you got this news!

1.7mill post was may be ok, but pre wash would certainly be a problem (especially if there are any abnormal sperm.)

Your plan to keep DH on the meds and get another SA is a good one. I'll pray that they help improve the numbers/motility and morphology.

Just remember though, that you should ideally wait a minimum of 3 months (74 days) before you get a new SA, if you want to see improvement from lifestyle and meds, simply because sperm take 3 months to mature, so technically, the sperm that are created in the testicles today will only be ejaculated in 3 months times.

Hope that helps.

(((HUGS))) This is definitely difficult news to get!

Meeting with a urologist (who specializes in MFI!!!) should definitely be your first plan of action. With varied results, there's likely a better chance that something can be done. Unfortunately, yes, it does take 3 months to see if anything has made a difference, which can add to the frustration and stress. While waiting to see if there's a change, you can start saving for further treatment if necessary. (And if not, take a vacation, put it in a college fund, or buy a $1700 buggy if you want!) We got the same results a year ago, and this is what we've been doing anyways.

Another thing to consider if his counts vary so much, is to consider freezing sperm. If he gets a good SA, schedule a freeze immediately. Or arrange ahead of time for them to do an immediate freeze if the numbers are good. You can use it for an IUI later on that way.

I have a friend who has a beautiful daughter....from her IUI with 1 million sperm...all it takes is one! And remember...my dr said the S/A could be the best the man has or the worst...it's just fluxuates so much. I'd put him on the meds you suggest for 3 months, maybe check into acupuncture and the urologist...maybe he has a varicocele that needs fixing or something to improve his counts.

You are not out yet. Did they say what the forward progression was or the morphology?

I know it's not the news you wanted to hear...but you are not out yet, girl!!

Nikki, My DH has a low count as well. He was at 4 million. He did research online & started to take L-Carnytine vitamins along with a men's multivitamin. He went from 4 million to 12 million to 54 million in about 6 months. May be try the L-Carnytine.

Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions, they really are comforting. I did think about freezing also, I will have to mention it to RE. And also, thanks for the supplement recommendations.

How much does he take? There is some in the fertilaid, not sure how much.

I am sorry you got such tough news
I am a big believer in supplements helping. While our MFI are not horrible, it did really help us. Poor DH is on so many pills tho... I swear he will burn the bottles when I do get pg!
I say try the supplements and see how it goes.
I actually got a notification on an old thread that was bumped today:

GL!! FX the SA improves!!!
