After nearly two years of TTC, DH and I will be going to our first RE appointment. It is not until Monday, but I feel like it cannot come soon enough. I feel like I have been counting down the hours and minutes until that first appointment. I just want to know what the doc can do for us. I have made a list, I don't know how many times, of questions to ask the doc. I am a nervous excited. I feel like we are finally going to be able to get things moving in the baby-making department. It has been hard for us, because we have no idea what is wrong. All of the tests that have been done on DH and myself came back normal. I feel like it would be a lot easier to go through this knowing what is wrong, and knowing what steps to take to improve our chances.
So, ladies who have already had their first appointment, is there anything that you can tell me as far as what to expect in our first visit to the RE?
Good luck!!! I remember my 1st appt. I went in with all these charts. He ever even looked at them! I remember thinking that they had to mean something, right?!?! But they really do control your cycle. At least for us they did. Your case sounds similar to us. We didn't have any notable issues. Just needed a little help, I guess! I would ask questions like...
How early do you see patients (if you work, you may need early morning appts)
- do you do procedures on weekends? I think most do, because your cycle can vary, but just so you knew for peace of mind. Check about holidays too!
- maybe ask about their timeline. For example- my re told me typically they do 3 rounds clomid, 3 rounds injectables, then ivf- but he said we could start at any point.
-is blood work/semen samples done/processed at their office
-do they take insurance? We were told that our insurance doesn't cover MA, however I asked them to run it anyways and surprisingly they covered a lot of it! Worth a shot I'd say!!!
I'm sure I'll think of more...but I'd say that is important to be comfortable with your doctor. He needs to be someone you trust! I know some might nt have options and maybe I just to lucky, but I really love my RE! And his staff! (since most of the time I'm dealing with them)
Before my first appt my husband and a sperm analysis. Then for my first appt we sat in his office and talked about why I was there and he did an ultrasound just to look around to see if anything looked off or not right. Then I was told to call back a certain amount of days after my period started (I forget that number) for another ultrasound to see what my follies looked like and how big or small they were. At that second appt is when he prescribed medicine for me to start taking the following cycle.
He told me at my first appt that he wanted one cycle to monitor things to know how to proceed. Im not sure if that is normal with all REs but that is what happened with me. Then the following cycle is when I started medication.
Good luck, I hope you like your RE and have a good appointment!
I did want to kinda warn you that 1/3 of cases are unexplained IF and you may fall into that. It doesn't mean you won't get a good treatment plan tho! It's just that sometimes they can't find a reason y/k?

Thank you ladies for all of your comments!!! Having more questions to add to my list is giving me something to do. I just need to make it through the weekend without obsessing over this upcoming first appointment.
I just had my appointment today and i have to say i am soo glad i did. My ob didnt do much for me and the re started off with rechecking my bloodwork and an ultrasound. She is just absolutely wonderful, she took time to go over our entire history and we go back to go over results and make a plan that will work for us. Hope your appointment goes well!
At my annual pap with my GYNO i met my RE The clinics work hand in hand as they are apart of a rather nice hospital My sexy RE was so nice and ordered a comprehensive metobolic blood panel and thyroid panel. He went over the results of my lap from a little over a year ago and stated we would not have to redo that since it was done so recently. I am to come in on CD 3 of my next cycle for a bit of blood work and repeat it on CD 3 of my first official cycle I go back in on May 1st which should be around CD9ish and I will have a follie scan etc. He is having me do one natural cycle to see how my follies grow and how my lining does on its own. DH is suppose to go in for another SA before my appointment on May 1st and we are going to go over the results of that as well Once all the bloodwork is back and the natural monitoring cycle is done, we will have a better idea of what comes next.
I feel so much better than I thought I would because having a plan gives me hope. I hope your appointment went great today!! Thinking of you
