Twin TTCMA mommas - Did you take extra Folic Acid because you were having twins?

My RE hasn't said I need extra but everything I am reading says double up on the folic acid.

I just read that too and was wondering because mine didn't mention anything. She just suggested extra b6 for the nausea. :/

Acupuncture is really keeping my nausea down. It think B6 is more cost effective though. RE wants me to keep my Acupuncture up at least till he releases me to OBGYN.

Yes. I was prescribed a 1,000mcg folic acid supplement to take daily (I think the normal recommendation is 400 mcg).

Also when you get a little further along, you will be more prone to anemia, so definitely make sure you are eating lots of iron-rich foods!

I also took extra an extra folic acid pill at first but then I found out that I was already buying the ones that had extra folic acid. You need about 1000mcg per day.

I tested slightly anemic once and then I ate more iron-rich foods and was fine.

Another big one is calcium but don't combine calcium and iron because calcium blocks the iron. I just make sure to drink lots of milk and eat dairy products.

My Gummies have 800 folic acid. I go back a week from today and will ask about taking more.

I love dairy products so that wont be an issue! Thanks guys!

I did, but they told me I didn't have to. I used a perscription prenatal though, and it was 2 pills a day and totally packed with vitamins. They did put me on a strict diet of high protein and healthy fats to gain 20 lbs by 20 weeks. He told me that was very important.
I believe him because my boys had to be induced at 35 1/2 weeks and they never spent a second in the NICU and came home with me from the hospital a few days later.

Ditto Melissa...pack on the pounds, especially in the early weeks! I was drinking protein shakes like they were going out of style. Yes my babies had NICU time, but at 33 weeks there's no way around that. They were a great size for their age

Gretchen, one of the books I sent has great info/charts/recipes about the whole weight gain issue.

I was reading about protein today and how its important to have a lot if having twins. Before I found out I was pregnant I was about to go on a fitness kick and bought this huge tub of protein shake powder...I should bust that out and start drinking it regularly now. How much did you guys have daily? I've read anywhere from 150 to 300 daily, so am unsure what to strive for.

I haven't really been given any direction yet. Maybe that will come on my first appointment with my midwife. That's what I'm assuming...that she'll give me the general game plan and diet recommendations then...but thats not til June 5. Do REs generally not give as much direction in that regard?

KMH -- what books do you recommend?

I am already over weight so I don't need to gain as much as someone that is of regular size.

I have my appointment scheduled with high risk OBGYN in June when my RE releases me. Melissa - I know you had a VBAC but what about you other Melissa? lol

I am freaking myself out about c-sections and bed rest and just about everything else there is to worry about including keeping these guys in here so I can eventually raise them. I know these are good this to be freaked out about compared to TTCMA and dealing with the desire to be pregnant. I hope no one takes me as being ungrateful I am far from that!

I also was told to gain lots early on. I was average weight before. My high risk ob who had twins herself said they recommend 24lbs by 24 weeks. My weight gain slowed down a bit around 30 weeks but they said that was fine.

Gretchen - I was extremely nervous from the moment I knew it was twins. I don't think that's uncommon with going from TTCMA to a high risk situation. Just take care of yourself. I was so fearful I had panic attacks over almost every little thing. My DH went to throw the crib boxes away and I panicked. My work threw me an early baby shower and I was so nervous over having it so early that I hardly enjoyed it. I know it's hard but just try to take some time to enjoy it.

Gretchen, it is totally normal to be freaked out! I was a basketcase It is a weird situation to be in, because for so long we have prayed "God, just give me a baby and I promise I'll never complain." Then we get pregnant and there are some things that just really stink (bedrest, NICU, etc.) and we feel like we don't have the right to complain. I totally get it, and I'll never think that you are ungrateful. I don't think anyone else will, either.

If ya ever need to vent off the boards, I'm only a PM away.

I haven't gotten much direction at all from RE regarding weight gain. He just keeps saying make sure I eat healthy.

Juliemc - Dec ddc is saying protein powder while pregnant is a no -no but I don't know why. I have made a few fruit smoothies with protein powder in them myself.

katie - I've never had a panic attack in my life until recently. Even the IVF process didn't give me panic attacks and that process is enough to drive anyone insane.

Yes Melissa - that is exactly how I feel. Like I've lost the right to be scared or something because I agreed to have 2 embies transferred. We just wanted to make our odds the best of it working. It's like I've gone from totally desperate to excitably frantic. I may be PMing you tonight if I can stay awake. This is probably not the place for this - sorry to my lovely ladies. This is my home though and it feels safe here to me.

Maybe they are talking about soy protein powder? Too much soy isn't great during pregnancy (or ever, really). Whey protein powder was recommended in the book I sent you as well as by my docs. It is healthy and safe and really helped me put on the weight I needed (I was a bit underweight before my FET, so I needed to pack on the pounds). Just make sure you get the plain stuff without all kinds of funky vitamins, herbs, sugars, etc. I got mine from GNC and their website is being stubborn right now, but you need something like this: Amazon.com: NOW Foods Whey Protein Isolate, 100% Pure 5Lb (Packaging May Vary): Health & Personal Care. Personally I liked the unflavored kind and put it into fruit smoothies, oatmeal, etc.

You don't want to rely solely on protein powder for your protein as you would then be missing other vitamins/nutrients that are necessary...variety is the spice of life and all that

That might be it. I know soy isn't good. The kind of protein powder I have is the whey kind. I'll have to check the other ingredients and see if everything else is okay. I definitely wouldn't rely on it for my only protein intake, but it will help me reach what I need to get in daily.

Not that I have an ounce of knowledge about twins but with dd and currently, I'm taking a prenatal plus an extra folic acid. My dr didn't really tell me to do that, I just did and I swear that's why my dd is a genius lol!!! But wouldn't you just pee out an excess like with a normal vitamin overload? I dunno, my 2 cents probably aren't worth much...

Whey protein powder was recommended to me as well. I was getting enough without it because I was so hungry and all I wanted was burgers ( I just tried to limit the buns and everything else with it, just had plain burgers).

As for the panic attacks, I'd had them before but this twin pregnancy intensified it big time. I just made sure my DH and people around me helping me with stuff knew to just kind of let me do things on my own as I came to terms with them. Find a good OB and share your fears with them. That was the biggest thing that helped me. She completely understood and had me coming in every two weeks. Once when I didn't think I could feel baby A, the nurses wanted to send me to L and D and I refused she ended up calling me back and told me to come to her and she did the ultrasound there to check the heartbeats. It was well worth it to find someone who understood and responded to my fears.
