What is a mock cycle? What does it entail?

Mandyellen - a mock cycle or mock transfer?

I have not heard of a mock cycle and not sure why one would be beneficial and sounds expensive.

Mock transfer is just one visit for 10 minutes. They measure your uterus and it's a lot like an IUI. It's just practice for when they do the real transfer so RE knows right where to put the embies.

May be mock transfer. I swear she said mock cycle though. Hmmm...may be I should call. I've had 2 transfers for IVF with them before...the last one being in Dec. I guess I definitely need to call.

I found this online about surrogacy though...

Basically, both the surrogate and the IM take all the meds, shots, pills, patches, etc, and have all the blood tests and ultrasounds done, as if they were doing a *real* cycle. Hormone levels are monitored, egg quality and quantity are closely watched, uterine lining is measured, etc, just like the real deal. Then, a day or two before an egg retrieval would normally take place, the RE will evaluate everyone’s responses, and say, “OK …. Whew! Looks like we’re good to go for the real thing!” Then, you both stop all your meds, get your periods (hey, there’s some female bonding, isn’t there???) give the IM’s ovaries a month to rest, and then basically start all over again … for “realsies” this time.

You didn't have to do this, Gretchen???

Because my lining looked a little funny during my fresh cycle, we did a freeze all for a FET later. But before my FET I did a mock cycle and endometrial biopsy. Basically, I did everything like I was going to transfer, but the day that should have been transfer was the day the endometrial biopsy was done. I can’t remember everything my lining was tested for, but I’ll see if I can find the results to let you know.

So the donor takes all the meds and grows tons of eggs...and then they do nothing?

No, KMH, tht quote is for surrogacy. I just heard back from my nurse that I cycle as though I were going to have my DE transfer (the fresh donor would just be "on hold" for me to complete this cycle in order for her to be cleared to start. They make me take my meds (BCP, Lupron and then Estrace) and I go in for scans and bloodwork as though I really was doing the DE IVF. Apparently, it's just to check that I respond to those meds to make a nice lining so that there's no reason to stop the real thing because I'm not responding well or my lining isn't ready for transfer. They can tweak the meds if need be for the real transfer.

No we didn't do that AT ALL. That seems super expensive and really not beneficial.

I can see a cycle getting cancelled if everything isn't perfect but to actually plan a cycle and if everything looks good and DO NOTHING seems crazy to me.

Got it! That makes sense since you have to be ready for the transfer on a certain day.

I'm so excited that you are getting close to cycling again

Oh okay that makes more sense to mock cycle just you... to make sure your linning responds and they can make you NOT ovulate. We didn't do this though...we just went for it. I imagine if something would have been wrong with my lining they still would have done DE retrieval and fertilized them and then froze them. Then we would try again next cycle to get my lining fluffy.

I did do Acupuncture as well and I believe that helped with my lining too to prepare for transfer. You might want to look into acupuncture at the same time.

I've done acupuncture before. I need to call my guy and start up again. Thanks for the suggestion, Gretchen.

If we do decide on the frozen eggs, we won't need a mock cycle. Don't know why that is though.

Plus, in all of my IUIs and IVFs my lining has always been 12 or more, which my RE has told me is great. That's one of the reasons she said that she believes I can hold a pregnancy & suggested DE. I'm going to call and ask. Man, my nurse has got to be sick of me...too bad she's stuck with me and my questions for a little bit longer!

So there should be no reason to believe you wont grow a nice fluffy lining for your embies! Will your insurance pay for a mock cycle?

When we paid with check for our stuff - I looked at the nurse and said, "you are mine till this is over" LOL She said, "I've already been yours for 2.5 years". haha!

The staff has always been wonderful and when you have a lot of questions you need to get them answered in a timely manner to keep stress down.

My insurance will cover a mock cycle. Thank God!

My RE's office has always been really attentive to me and all of my questions along the way. When we were in there yesterday waiting for the psychologist, it was like we were RE office celebrities. Everyone who works there stopped to talk to us, said hello to us by our names, etc. The other people in the waiting room kept looking at us because even the nurses coming out to get them stopped to chat with us first and find out how we're doing and what our plan is!

Even today, I've gotten calls right back. So, I have every confidence that they are there to help us!
