We had to change our appointment to friday (at 11) and even though I feel like we will not be moving forward with IVF right now, I still want to use the opportunity to get all the information I can for future use. Ive been working on a list but it feels light...What would you ask/did you ask? (still hoping he has something creative to try for another round of IUI but not betting on that)
Here is what I have so far
(a few questions regarding DH counts)
His success rates and average Number of cycles
how many embroyos usually transferred
freezing embroyos and costs
Of course costs of the whole procedure.

Im sure missing important stuff...what else is there! TIA

His Embryologist name and how long he/she has been there (can be a direct coloration of RE's success rates)

Success rates for the last 6 months

Number of IVF cases in last 6 months

Do they have a time of year where they do not do IVF? (my clinic closes from Nov - Feb for IVF cases)

Do they do group cycles or individual ones? If it's group, how backed up are they?

Do they offer eSET and if so what is the criteria?

Wow Melissa thats an awesome list!!!!

Check out Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies to find pregnancy rates for your clinic. Focus on live birth per embryo transfer rate, and FET rate. Also look at how many cycles they do a year.

To expand on kayak's embryologist comment - it is important to have a good embryologist on staff, and their skill dictates the pregnancy rate. However, the lab director is probably the only one you will find any meaningful information on. We embryologists are a little overlooked sometimes. And the length of time an embryologist has been at a clinic can be irrelevant. I have been at my clinic for a little more than 5 months, but have several years of experience, am very skilled at all embryology aspects and have always had stellar rates. But, if you googled me, you wouldn't find much. The clinic I am at now is one of the best clinics in the US. And we have a young, enthusiastic team. So, it is more important to look at pregnancy rates than at the embryologists themselves. Does that make sense?

Definitely ask about if they do genetic testing, what day they biopsy embryos and how many they do. Also if they do vitrification. This will tell you how up.to date their lab is and how experienced they are with new technology.

I'll jump in, but Lucy you can always answer, too.

eSET is Elective Single Embryo Transfer. That is becoming the standard for a lot of clinics with young, healthy couples. One of our grads went to a clinic that didn't allow her to transfer more than one embryo, so it is definitely something to ask about.

Some clinics base everything on the individual. It is more common, though, to see IVF done in groups or on set schedules. For example, my RE started all IVF cycles on a certain day of the week to keep patients roughly together. At military clinics they have very set-in-stone schedules for when IVF cycles start for everyone and they don't make exceptions. Some clinics have waiting lists. Some only do certain protocols for certain groups (like they'll to long lupron protocol ladies at one time and antagonist protocol ladies at another time).

Thanks so much for the insight!
I hear my dr talk about having an ivf cycle ( like if I had to go in on a Sunday) but I don't know if that's the group or individual. DHs business partner just told him told him today they are pg( they did ivf with same doc) I guess I need to ask them questions too.

I'm adding all this to my list! Thanks so much guys!

Thank you melissa!!

I knew my clinic did eSET but thought since I was 36yo I would not qualify. I was wrong and it threw us for a loop last minute! Instead of transferring 2 like we talked and planned, we transferred 1. With the eSET, since it our IVF didn't work, the clinic is paying for our FET in Nov!

My clinic was small. One RE and one Embryologist. My Clinics stats were not good at all. However, their current stats where good but they were not published yet. The reason is they had a new Embryologist and their stats were more like 60% success rate. I did research on the Embryologist and found that where he came from had good rates too so I was confident in staying at my clinic for my IVF.

With the bigger clinics I agree with Mojo.
