how do you do your treatments and appointments with out losing your job?

We've decided I'm going to go to work (well, I decided, he agreed). But now we're wondering how people who are facing fertility treatments manage to do them and keep their job? We're looking at having a 90 minute to two hour drive each way to the fertility center if we choose Milwaukee... I just can't see how I'd manage to get enough time off to do a round of IVF (IUI could be done here locally).

Since we are at least a year away from considering IVF I'd hopefully have a year in on the job, but I'd rather not use any vacation time for treatments since I'd want to save it for real vacations or time off during pregnancy since I would like to work as long as possible. I do not need to bank it for maternity leave as I will not be going back after we have a baby.

I don't have much advice to offer as this fall will be my first IVF cycle. I know I did have to work with my employers to get to all the visits involved with my IUI's, but they were understanding and it all worked out, but it was all local as well. So far my work is okay with me taking one extra day off to make it out for my one all-day testing day coming up (one extra day off added to my normal "weekend"), but my manager is super awesome and her daughter has gone through IVF, so she knows a lot about what is required for the whole thing and super understanding about my needs with medical stuff. When we actually take the time off for the ER and ET and all of that, I will probably have to take time off my job, but the hubs and I have talked about it and we don't really have much choice since we are going out of state and it is vacation time or not doing it. Luckily he is able to travel and work, but he will also take off some days to be fully there for it all as well.

Sorry, that all probably didn't help you much. I am super excited that you and your DH are getting a plan in place for it all and considering all of this stuff. I am sure you will work it out and it will all come together in the end. Do you know what kind of work you are planning on going into already? I was just thinking that if it is something like teaching or seasonal or something like that you may be able to plan to cycle during a break like summer vacation or something? Just a thought.

When we were doing treatments my work was super strict on attendance. I told my manager, when I we would be having consecutive appointments, I am going through medical treatments and I have set appointments I must attend. As soon as one was added ( an appointment) I would let her know. I didn't want to talk about my infertility with work so that's how I handled it.
I let them know I would get a dr note if they want to see it.

Most of my work experience is in Customer Service, a bunch of high end companies (banks and what not, rather than cell phone companies) are hiring locally. I have a phone interview next week for a bank call center to do their flexible savings accounts (and since I had to research what they were... I want one LOL). It doesn't sound like something too complicated for me.

I hurt my foot in 2012, and it has never fully healed, causes me daily pain. That restricts me more than the old hand injury since I can brace or wrap that and still use a computer, it's really hard to take 200lbs off a foot when you work on y our feet. So no retail jobs for me.. I'd been considering going part time for Starbucks before the crap with DH's job started happening (he didn't get the one he was told he had.. so he effectively quit one... so he's scrambling to find something else temporary that we can still live off of).

We've pretty much nailed out what we're going to do.

Vitamins for him
Re-Do Sa before he sees doctor
See what doctor has to say
Go from there.

If his counts improve, we'll try naturally when possible until summer (when we expect a short lay off for him) and then we'll try one IUI maybe two.

If his counts don't improve, we try naturally until we save enough for a round of IVF+ICSI+PGD (not taking any risks with genetic troubles) and a FET.

Sadly we're likely looking at summer 2016 at IVF... that'll put us at 4.5 years trying AND put us at our Original deadline for being done (Nov 2016). I've convinced him to keep trying by saying I'll work and pay for infertility, he works and pays for a house. That kept him happy.

FMLA

I am lucky and have a flexible schedule and my RE office was only 10 minutes from work and home. He also opened at 7am so I could do almost everything before 8am.

If you have a clinic near you that you can do the IUI, then you *probably* can do all your bloodwork and monitoring at that clinic and just the big stuff (initial appt, SHG, retrieval and transfer) at the big clinic farther away. And a lot of the IUI clinics do open earlier. Also, some of my appts were only a blood draw, I was in and out in less than 10 mins. Call the IVF clinic and see if they have any satellite offices in your area?

I work with my parents, so they didn't mind if I was gone, as long as I get my work done. I know it's not that easy for everyone

PS good luck on the job search!

I told two women that I worked with that I was doing IUIs then ivf. They covered for me. My RE opened at 6am for monitoring so I could be to work by 8 most of the time. It was an hour and a half from my house (but closer to my office). Monitoring was done first come, first served. So I made sure to be there at 6am to get one of the first appointments each time. I did take off for egg retrieval and transfers. Twice (out of 4 ivfs) I took off the week after my transfer. Good luck with your interview.

At my place of employment, I work for the most part independently of others. As long as I get my work done, there really isn't anyone looking for me and as long as I have the time, I can take it. Yep, pretty nice. I'd never be able to do this at my last job.

I can do labs locally, but my OB said everything else would get done in Milwaukee. IUI's would be done via my OB, but only if his counts improved drastically. They recommend nothing below 3 mil for IUI.. that's 5x what his first SA was :/

I could see me having to either get a medical leave for two weeks every time we cycled, or fessing up to what we were doing. Call centers aren't usually that forgiving in their time off. :/ He told me not to stress, I can quit if I have to because we'll have saved up the money for it before we do it, so we wouldn't "NEED" the income. But the back of my head says "but you can buy nicer things if you work.. think of all the cloth diapers!" rofl.

I would check your local employment laws on what you must disclose. I don't think that you need to tell them anything. But that is a mn law

I am really lucky that I work for a great team of 3 guys and they are very flexible with me. And, my office is only a 30 minute drive, so for scans I would just take a hour and a half lunch and make up the time. We always have a backup here to cover as well, though.

I did tell my manager, but only her and asked her to keep it private.

I might get lucky, the job I applied for is only open m-f from 7-5:30. So as long as they could bend the rules and put me on opening shifts, I'd be able to schedule everything after 4:30

Now they just need to like my phone interview, and call me back for an in person and then hire me

I hope they call you back!

I totally don't want to rain on your parade, but a lot of REs have fairly regular scheduling...for example my RE did monitoring appointments from 7-9:30 and IUIs from 9:30 until 10:30. New patient appointments were after lunch on M-W-F. Surgeries were Tuesday/Thursday after lunch. Monitoring or IUIs wouldn't have happened after 4:30...I think he was on the golf course by then Try not to stress too much...these things often work themselves out better than we imagine!

My clinic is about 30 minutes away. I've explained to my boss (6 months in advance) what my husband and I plan on doing and how there might only be 24 hours advance notice. I explained to her I'd give her as much advanced notice as I possible can. She seems pretty supportive about it. I am an assistant teacher. My husband works for the same company as I, but different building and he has also explained to his boss. It makes it better for him because his boss and his wife have gone through invitro twice with 2 blessings, so he knows what we're going through.

I called them and they said if I HAD to, I could have any basic monitoring (they said labs and to check on follicles) done here in town. The fertility clinic here in town (they don't do ivf) is open from 7 until 5:30. I'd have to go to the RE on weekends though.

I'm still sitting firmly in camp "vitamins and the dr are gonna fix DH and we aren't gonna need IVF", mostly because I want to save up bunches of money only to find out we don't need to spend it on IVF and I can buy pretty things with it. LOL

Fortunately I'm very lucky with my job. My supervisors are all in my court and WANT my IVF to be successful - plus I work from home 3 days a week and only live literally 15 minutes from our RE...and I get 5 weeks of PTO a year...so whatever time I need to take off, if I need to, I can easily make it up or just use PTO.

Good luck!!
