If an engaged couple breaks the engagement - who should keep the ring?

I think the woman should return it, especially since many people use rings that have been passed down in their families.

whoever paid for it, or if it was a passed down item, back to the man.

I agree. The girl should return it. I can't see why she would want to keep it anyway. It's not like she will keep wearing it.

Yeah, I think she should give it back. Esp if it was a family heirloom. I gave mine back to my ex-fiance and I lent him $1400. I thought of it as buying my freedom without guilt. He came around a while later and paid me back in cash, which was a real shock.

Depends... if it was something that got passed down in his family, then he should get it back no matter what. If it wasn't a family heirloom and he did something like cheat on her or abuse her or something to that effect I think she should get to keep the ring and pawn the sucker. If nothing like that happened, then I think he should get the ring back
