My dh's job is up in the air. He works for a union and has been lucky to be employed with a power plant for many years. The power plant is changing things up and he may not be able to stay there. (It's hard to explain without going into how unions operate) He may have to be laid off and added to his unions "lay off list". The union calls men off the list when work becomes available and they go in order. If he is laid off - he will be #117 on the list. Most of the guys on the list have been there for almost a year or longer. There just isn't any work right now. He can't quit the union because he is 9 years from being able to retire from it!! He would lose his pension.

Please pray that he is able to stay. This economy stinks.

Praying for your family Shari! My brother is going through something similiar. He works for the Laborer's Union in Utah and the job they are on now is almost over. If another doesn't come up soon, they will be doing the same thing out there. And you are right, economy does stink! It's so tough for everyone right now!

So sorry. I don't pretend to understand all this. At least you are working now, too, so you will have some money coming in. And won't he get unemployment? Is there anything he can do in the meantime? Deliver pizzas, snow blow driveways, fix cars, anything?

Yes, he gets unemployment but he will lose his benefits after a few months. And unemployment is a lot lower than his paycheck is normally. And if he doesn't get a certain amount of hours each year - it doesn't count as a year toward his retirement. I am grateful to be working and at least it is something.

He does contracting work on the side - but with this economy not many people are diving into expensive home improvement projects.

My hubby is in the plumber's union, so I understand how the unions work. Sometimes they really stink. He got laid off in December and was number 250 on the list. They told him to get comfortable. He just got picked up two weeks ago by a shop and bypassed all the other 250 people before him. Because he had licensing that no one else has. It's cost us some money and schooling time, but has kept him off the bench, so to speak. Is there any licensing or extras your hubby can get to make him stand out if he does get laid off? It might really increase his chances of being picked up. PM me if you want more details about it, I'll be glad to answer your questions! Hope that helps, and prayers to him and you, it's tough.
