i see so many of you writing here about that never-ending chore. i remember when i had a mountain of laundry too -- until i started to designate that each kid did his own at about age 10-11. now that all are grown and gone, i usually do laundry on monday morning - a light load, a dark load, towels and sheets. that is it, that is all....for the whole week!!!
i wanted to give you hope for a future that does NOT include daily multiple loads in the washer/dryer.
My oldest 3 boys do their own for the most part, they are 13, 15 and 17. Its still a monumental chore. I keep trying to make it easier, and less of a hassle for me, so far it just isn't working.
I've been working with Lyss to do her own laundry but when on her own she will just put in the next day's outfit to wash! I'm still working on her though, maybe someday.

I don't think I'll let my kids do their own laundry any time soon, I am uhm...particular when it comes to how it gets sorted. But, I do most of it in one day and they hang it up and put it away, and do the socks (he parts I hate and are the most time consuming).
I found just making it my #1 priority 1 day out of the week helps otherwise I just don't get around to it and it ends up hanging over the couch forever.
I dry most of it on the line and thought my 9 yo could handle hanging towels. I mean they are just rectangles! No. All wonky with random clips. Sapphire is 13 and can wash and dry her own clothes but I don't sort hers separately so it is just as easy for me to wash it.
