i used to be able to bake cookies pretty well, but in the last few years, no way. i wonder if its because i have an electric oven now rather than gas?
I have often sworn that. I grew up with an electric stove, but after I got married, we had gas. Someone that I worked with once brought in food that was cooked in an electric oven, and I could TASTE the difference. I don't know how else to describe it. I asked him if it was cooked in an electric oven, and he said it was. Baking times seem to vary, and the taste can change. We rented a place a few years ago that was electric, and I was so happy to get a gas stove back again. It really DOES make a difference!
Mommy to Jasmine (17), Kirsten (13), Ana (12), Katie (2), Xavier (1), and...
1/3 c shortening or butter, don't use margarine. I prefer butter.
1/2 c yellow cornmeal
1/2 c flour
1/2 c sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1 egg beaten
2/3 c evaporated milk
1/3 c water
Melt butter in skillet (or baking dish) at 400*. Mix dry ingredients. I beat the egg into the evap milk/water mix then add to dry ingredients. Pour half the hot melted butter into the mixture, leave half in pan, pour mixture into pan and bake 15 min. Try not to open oven at all for the 15 min. Should be done at that point, but can leave in a few (2-3) extra min if top isn't browned to your liking.

I tried to make this creamed cauliflower that was supposed to be a healthier version of mashed potatoes. It smelled disgusting and actually broke my magic bullet, lol.
Also I tried to make kale. I was told to just pop it in the oven for a few minutes. It was like hard and bitter. We were all throwing at each over the table...started my dh and myself I think. We're not very mature....
Shortly after dh and I got married, I tried to make broiled steak and red potatoes. I'm not sure who wrote these recipes. I'm pretty sure they didn't know anything about cooking. I followed the recipes to a T and the steak was burned on the outside, caught fire and was raw on the inside. The potatoes weren't cooked all the way. DH ate it all anyway! So sweet!! I've learned a lot about cooking since then.
Lately, our oven seems to be messed up. It takes forever to preheat, and cornbread will not cook properly in it at all. It's gummy and tastes/smells too much like egg. Huge bummer, because I absolutely LOVE cornbread, especially with chili.
